Spoilers Vikings S5 returns (potential spoilers)

So the midseason is set to premiere tonight, and the show has been renewed for a sixth season as well. I heard Katheryn Winnick will be making her directorial debut with one of the new episodes.

I'm glad Winnick is getting the chance to work behind the camera. She and Gustaf Skarsgård are the only reasons why I watch anymore because the show has gotten so ridiculous, even by its own standards.

Nice to see Rollo pop up again after a (half) season of hearing about him, but man, he's gotten old, tired, and docile. If Ragnar was still around, he would laugh and laugh. Hell, I'm shocked Ivar didn't mock him more.

I just wish Bjorn finally put the bastard out of his misery.

Maybe my bad memory is acting up again, but is this the first time it's been suggested that Bjorn is actually Rollo's son? I remember Rollo lusting after Lagertha for years but I always thought it was decidedly one-sided and yet here it's suggested they did have a thing at one point. Revisionist "history" or my memory playing tricks again?

Floki continues to live a miserable life with miserable people in a miserable land. It's worth it for Gustaf Skarsgård, but only just barely. I sure wish he had better actors/characters to work with. Gone are the days of magnetic character chemistry.

I quite after season 4, but I believe that Lagertha and Rollo never had sex with each other

Well Ragnar and Lagertha did invite Athelstan to join them for a threesome, so why not Rollo at some point.

Also Margrethe is shared by Ragnars son before marrying one of them. Maybe that kinda thing is pretty normal.

Yeah, but I distinctly recall Lagertha spurning Rollo's repeated advances and flirtations at her.

Lagertha spurning Rollos advances without Ragnars approval kinda makes sense.

What makes more sense is that Rollo would fall in love with and relentlessly chase after Lagertha if they did indeed have some kind of history.

I want to see more of Rollo's adventures. The historical timing is way off, but whatever. This is the same channel that plays "Ancient Aliens," after all.

Lagertha's sudden Silver hair is gorgeous, but, yeah, the aging scale is really skewed.

This weeks episode was very weak, also floki and co have become a really pointless and annoying story arc.

They need some big battles ASAP!

Become? It's been a pointless story arc since last season.

The only good thing about this episode is the return of Magnus. I've actually been looking forward to his return and I like that he immediately connected with Bjorn.

I had hoped they would somehow go big with the Floki arc and we'd get a pay off, but that looks very unlikely now.

I wasn't very enthused by the appearance of Magnus. Something tells me he is gonna a snively ratty type and try get Bjorn to do his dirty work. The casting looks very unepic!

Maybe, but I think it's too early to tell with Magnus. I hope you're wrong on that count.

As for the casting, remember that he's half-English so his epic Nordic blood is diluted. ;)

I love how many of them are bastards claiming famous or regal parentage or just had it approved. Alfred is Aethelstan's kid, Bjorn is Rollo's, Magnus is who knows, Ivar's kid is the dead guy's, Alfred's kid should he have one might well be Bjorn's. Harald's speech about the unimportant of Ragnar's name and legacy in the long run is really counterpointed by how much faith we throw on parentage is really based just smoke and mirrors.

Stepping over to the crazy camp, I wonder if Ivar's dream was him subconsciously understanding Freydis is really as crazy as Margarethe but he consciously denies the possibility since she is the only one since auslaug to love him unconditionally? Another question, do you think Freydis had Margarethe killed in order to drive a wedge between Ivar and Hvitserk so Ivar would be more dependent on her? Ivar really does tend to do his own killing rather than use assassins. That doesn't seem his style. I do expect the sacrifice to be a faux Lagertha, though. Another bit of smoke and mirrors but it would kill Lagertha to the people of Kattegat and fulfill the Seers prophecy after a fashion.

Yeah, I definitely think Freydis ordered Margarethe's assassination and she's doing all of these machinations as a quiet power grab. Ivar is completely blind to it because of his ego and, as you said, he deeply needs to feel like he's being loved. Just imagine his rage if he ever found out the truth...

Good call on a faux Lagertha. I was pretty much convinced it would be Hvitserk as heavily implied, but only because I knew there wasn't anyone else with real name recognition still in the area.

The Seer's prophecy was so long ago (at least for my shitty memory) that I can't recall what he said to Lagertha. I knew there was some significance to cutting to him but I couldn't remember what it was.

Lagertha asks if she will be killed by a son of Ragnar and he simply answers yes after some prodding.

That could present some problems for Ivar if he runs into her again. He can't admit it's her so he could find everyone thinking she's dead and come back to Earth. His allies might think she's some kind of Valkyrie come back to kill them all. That would be a funny way to send up Wynnik's character never really seeming to age apart from getting silver hair. Heck, that could play into the Valkyrie thing, too. Unlikely, but it would be amusing to see the newly deified Ivar having to handle a purportedly immortal Lagertha. A Viking Ghost Who Walks.

Ah, there we go. Thanks for the refresher.

Good point about the predicament Ivar would find himself in if he killed a faux Lagertha. He's not one for clear thinking or considering long-term effects so I'm sure he doesn't care about any of that. However, it doesn't look like she'll be back in Kattegat anytime soon.
