Veronica Mars Movie - Kickstarter

This worries me a hell of a lot....

There was a real internal debate, for me, about what kind of movie I wanted to make. Just by way of example, I really enjoyed "Side Effects," and that sort of noir thriller that I could see Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars in something like that. I liked the plotting of that movie. I had some desire, as a filmmaker, to take Veronica in a slightly new direction and do something adventurous with her. Or, there's the "give the people what they want" version. And I think partly because it's crowd-sourced, I'm going with the "give the people what they want" version. It's going to be Veronica being Veronica, and the characters you know and love. Certainly, I think I can make a fun, great movie out of that, and I'm excited about that, but it was a creative debate I had with myself, and I finally made the decision that I'm happy with it, to go with, "Let's not piss people off who all donated. Let's give them the stuff that I think that they want in the movie."

I'm not sure what part of that worries you. It's been years since the show went off the air so it would hardly make sense to have it still be a high school or college mystery drama. Veronica Mars the character has surely moved on with her life and we'd get to see what Rob Thomas had in mind. Personally I'm not too concerned he's going to go too left field with whatever he has in mind (e.g., turning Veronica into super-spy Nikita or something equally silly).

Semi-Spoilers on the plot of the VM movie

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Veronica-Mars-Movie-Plot-Details-Reveal-Murder-Mystery-36418.html

"Murder" isn't a huge spoiler, as it was a recurring theme on Veronica Mars, with the UPN series' first season focusing on the murder of Kristen Bell's character's best friend Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried). And from what Entertainment Weekly published in their latest issue, which discusses the Kickstarter campaign for the movie, murder is the planned focus for the film.

(More specific plot spoilers ahead)

EW says the plot will be set a decade after the show's third season and will have Veronica returning to Neptune, California after Logan (Jason Dohring) seeks her help in investigating the murder of his pop-star girlfriend. He's apparently the prime suspect, which doesn't sound all that unfamiliar when we look back at Season 1 of the series.

We also know from what Thomas has said on the Kickstarter page that there may be a 10 year high school reunion at Neptune High, which would certainly provide an excuse to bring some of Veronica's old friends back into the picture. Go pirates!

Also mentioned in the article is Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell's hope to bring some footage of the film to Comic Con this year. If they do manage to get the film started in June, they might have something finished to show Veronica Mars fans at SDCC in July. It would be pretty fantastic if they can make that happen.

EW's full article about the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter campaign can be read in EW's "News and Notes" column on page 13 of the March 22, 2013 issue (with the Game of Thrones cover).

Umm... what part did I have a problem with? Maybe the part I bold and quoted.

My problem is Rob Thomas isn't going to make the movie he wanted to make with a slightly different feel VM, but ones the fans want because they funded it. He should do whatever he wants and fuck the fans.

I'm pretty sure he's going to make whatever the heck is floating around in his head and not crowdsource the script just because it's Kickstarter funded. I don't think many true artists and writers would change their work that much to accomodate what the fans want.

You're reading way too much into that comment.

Unless I missed it, there's no indication of what "giving the fans what they want" means and how much it overlaps with his original plans. Maybe his plan was that dreadful looking FBI continuation without any of the original cast beyond Kristen Bell, in which case the leaked ideas would be a big departure from that. For all we know "giving the fans what they want" could mean that fan favorites like Logan or Keith show up again with minimal disruption to his original ideas.

No need to worry about the FBI angle. Thomas confirmed in that same interview that Veronica never joined the FBI.
