Vasquez Rocks (spoilers)

Did anyone else think the mountains on Vulcan very closely resembled the Vasquez Rocks where so much classic Trek was filmed? I think some shots of it (maybe all) were CGI, especially when the beam from the drill was tearing up Vulcan and the mountain appeared to be pretty big. Kind of a strange thing to pay homage to but also kind of a cool one.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the film crew didn't have a big space drill so they used CGI instead. Can't blame them too much.

I wonder if Sulu's sword was real though.

I believe if you do a bit of searching, you will find that the production did do some location filming at Vasquez Rocks.
