Vanguard - Reaping the Whirlwind

cbspock

Rear Admiral

I finally got up to book 3 of the series. Each book is like peeling an onion, it reveals more and more about the character backgrounds. I was a little surprised at one of the reveals the vulcan intel officer. I also have to go back to the prequel and read the SCE book about the construction of Vanguard.

These are some of the best Trek books I have read in a long time. :techman:

Glad you're enjoying them. Have you finished Reap the Whirlwind yet? If not, you're in for a wild ride as it nears the finish line....

I can so see this as a Trek series, it would just need a new hook once this Shedai thing gets resolved, or at least I am assuming it does...lol :p I can't wait to see what happens with Seekers.

I'm slowly working my way through book 3 as well, right now. The story's really picking up speed. :)

I'm just up to the part where the Sag is going to leave Vanguard on their mission.

If I remember things correctly (it's been awhile), then the shit is really about to hit the fan.:bolian::drool:

I kind of wish we saw more Tholians in the various series. They probably would have made an interesting "enemy". I also like how the Klingons incorporate the human looking Klingons from TOS and the explanation from Enterprise into this story and how they are treated by the other Klingons.

I like seeing appearances of other Trek characters either introduced in the series or movie series. into the story it makes the trek-verse seem a little bigger.

I also like the behind the scenes maneuvering of the Romulan Senate which sets up "Balance of Terror".

I am going to assume the tensions rising between the Klingons and the Federation in this story also blows up into the war and the tensions mentioned in Errand of Mercy.

The focus on, and development of, the Tholians is one of my favorite aspects of Vanguard.

That has been really interesting.

I can't believe who they are sending to "rescue" the crew of the Sag.

I have only read the first 4 Vanguard novels so far as part of my Chronological Reading Challenge but Reap the Whirlwind is without doubt my favourite so far.

My quote from the review I wrote says it all:
"Simply put, I believe this novel and the series in general is proving to be Star Trek at its very best."

Whilst the next book in the series still entertained me it almost felt like a comedown after this superb book.

Finished the book a few days ago. Wasn't that overwhelmed by the first 2 parts of the Vanguard-series, but "Reap the Whirlwind"... wow. I like how all the plotthreads are coming together and I'm looking forward to the continuation.

Due to circumstances out of my control I haven't been able to dive further into the book this past week. Hopefully I can finish it this week. I really like how the series is coming together.

I noticed in book 3 there was another reference to Deneva, I guess they are setting up what happens to the Capt. of the Endeavor's family in Operation Annihilate.
