Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Just finished. Simply.... Astounding. I want to write more, but I am still riding the waves of happiness...

Wowsa.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

RTW is a solid, engaging story that really heats up the Taurus Reach. I love what you've done with the Shedai, David, and I also love that the status quo for several major characters is altered dramatically during the book. As of right now, I'd give it an 8/10. There is a lot to like in this 400+ page tome, but it doesn't quite reach the level of the first two books in the series.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Thanks, Razuur2 and Smiley for your comments. Glad to see the book was to your liking. :)

150+ pages into it, and a lot of interesting actions going on. David, will it all be resolved by the end of the book?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

defintely a 10/10, i ended the book in complete shock at the events that concluded the novel

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Ronald,

Some issues will be resolved. Some new issues will arise. This is not the end of Vanguard, nor even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. (With apologies to the late Sir Winston Churchill.)

:)

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I'm at the halfway point of RTW and I am immensly enjoying it. So many twists and turns. It really is a page turner.

Y'know, not to pick on anyone or anything... but why not, instead of dog-earring page 150 and logging on to ask this question, don't you just keep reading the motherfrakking book and find out?? :wtf:

Not as many as I could have.

My only quibble with the book is the Klingon transport, carrying 3000+ people, buzzing the Earther colony on Gamma Tauri IV, then landing.

I'm unaware of any Star Trek vessel, canon or otherwise, with the capacity to carry so many, and maneuver in atmosphere. Three hundred would have been more believable.
But it would have kept your numbers low.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

It would seem that Archer and Kirk's ships had no problem maneuvering in atmospheres, nor apparently would the Jenolan that almost managed to take Scotty to retirement. Those could hold at least a couple of thousand people in discomfort, for the purposes of colonization.

We don't really know of a size limit to atmospheric maneuvering, either. The E-D had some trouble in "Arsenal of Freedom", but mainly because she was trying to shake the killer drone by deliberately engaging in edge-of-envelope maneuvers. Theoretically, any starship that can withstand impulse accelerations in deep space (including the giant Klingon transports from DS9 "Sons and Daughters") should be able to dive into the atmosphere of Venus, do a few happy cartwheels on the surface, and then balance herself on the tip of her nacelle, all with trivial ease. Buzzing the surface of a class M world should be a breeze in comparison...

I don't see where it's a problem. IMO it makes sense for there to be ships like that in the Trekverse, I would think they would kind of have to have some way to get large groups of people to and from places.

The Federation use colony convoys, several ships, not just one big one.

And i'm still waiting for my copy to turn up.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ The big colony ship was used by the Klingons, not by the Federation. Just FYI.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Is it too much to ask if the metagenome will be completely understood by the end of the book?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^Yup. Way too much to ask. But you do begin to get a feel for the impact it had in later Trek, specifically....

We see the beginings of the advanced medical equipment we see in 24th century Trek such as dermal regenerators, and apparently, given what we hear from new cast member Dr. Carol Marcus, the meta-genome becomes the basis for the Project Genesis technology from ST:2.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I'm on chapter 13, and I absolutely love the fact that the Sagittarius can actually go underwater. I'm also loving the book too, it deffinitely keeps Vanguard up with the other Titan and DS9R as my top 3 series.
