Vanguard on TOS Remastered!!

Could they have openly labelled it Vanguard if they'd wanted to? Meaning, there's no legal issues or anything like that?

I would imagine so. Though I don't know the particular details, I imagine Masao signed a contract with Pocket Books, just like any of the writers would do in the case of their novel or short story, acknowledging CBS' ownership of the work. I think Sean T. mentioned he did something similar with his Titan design as part of the agreement he also made.

^ Pretty much, yeah. If they'd wanted to retcon Vanguard into TOS, they could have --- Star Trek owns the copyright on everything we create for the books. They can use it or ignore it as they see fit, and they wouldn't owe us a cent, because it's all their property. We just worked on it.

Well even if it isn't strictly a Watchtower-class, it could easily be viewed as a sub-type; Starfleet is known for building starbases that look identical but for the completely different proportions. Compare the Spacedock from TSFS with the starbase in "11001001". The Regula-type has also been appeared on screen in many different sizes.

Do we know if Vanguard was the first Watchertower(?) class station? Because if it wasn't, then perhaps this station is a smaller prototype for the Watchtower. IMO it would make sense to make your prototype as small as possible and then slowly build bigger as you made more of that class.

^ I'd say Vanguard was likely not the first Watchtower-class starbase, because Spock was quite familiar with their construction specifications. There would, it stands to reason, be at least a few others in and around Federation space.

Besides, Vanguard was built in 2263-65, and the episode in question is set in 2268. So this starbase could've been built after Starbase 47. (Although TOS never mentioned a starbase number above 27.)

The TOS Episode "The Alternative Factor" mentions Starbase 200.

Hmm, you guys are right -- it is smaller in proportion to the docked starship (presumably the Lexington) than Vanguard is shown to be in the plans. A Connie-class starship should be about as long as the lower globe is wide. It looks like they've reduced the station's linear size by half.

Okay, so it's not a Watchtower-class station, but a similar, smaller type.

If I recall there was more than one size of the mushroom-shapped Spacedocks and I think the Regula 1 type had two sizes. Either way that's very cool.

I just found out about this. Looks a bit different, but I don't care! I am very very happy. I will get absolutely no work done today.

Go Vanguard!

welcome to the club of "seeing your work expanded on".

Yours is just a little more cannon than mine. Great work.

Thanks, Sean.

I'd like to see a big physical model of my design, like Titan, but animated pixels will do.

Congratulations, Masao! :D

This is extremely cool, and a well-deserved piece of recognition for your design...

...and hey, I wouldn't be able to get any work done, either, so don't even try.

Great news!

I bought Vanguard: Harbinger at a used bookstore two weeks ago and have read the first chapter or so. Great so far.

I stopped reading it to read my copy of Twist of Faith for the first time though. Almost done with that so Harbinger is up next. :)

Quite an interesting turn of events here. Very cool.

Although yeah, as soon as I saw the other Constitution-Class ship, I thought the station looked too small to be a Watchtower (unless the ship is closer and actually in orbit of the station). Doesn't appear as though a Connie could fit inside. The deflector dish also does not appear fixed to the bottom, but is instead at an angle.

Otherwise, it's a dead on match and doesn't look too much like the other stations from Masao's site to be anything other than a Watchtower.

I thought Masao specified (even in the book schematics) that the dish would swivel? Mainly because it would be a communications link to important places, and one might assume there would be multiple important places to choose from - or that the station would have to reorient itself every now and then, for example if in combat.

Yeah, this baby is smaller by comparison with the ship, although counting of window rows might be futile in both cases. I do wonder how a Constitution is supposed to do a hard dock. The Lexington seems to be going bow first.
