Vanguard: Declassified

Awesome to hear that Marco's going to be contributing a story!

Though this just has me more convinced than ever that it was Marco who wrote the prologue and epilogue to Prophecy and Change.

^I don't see how that follows. Yes, Marco is a writer as well as an editor, but that isn't evidence that he wrote those particular things.

Excellent news!Vanguard IMO is a bright spot in Treklit universe.
*Spoiler*Could somebody arrange it for Zetts' extremely pissed off twin brother to visit the station looking for revenge. Those Nalori rock!

My reactions, in order:

WOO! VANGUARD!

WOO! COOL IDEA FOR A BOOK!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! MARCO!!!!

I mean, I'm obviously thrilled that Dayton, Kevin, and David are writing more, but Marco was a surprise... and an EXTREMELY AWESOME one.

This is great. Next year is sounding more exciting with each announcement :)

My reaction exactly. And I've only read the first Vangaurd novel (and LOVED it), and the short story from the Mirror Universe collection (which I also loved).

I'm really glad to see that Pocket is still willing to try something different when it comes to the books.

That's what's interesting for me, 3 books announced, all 3 are something unusual. I'm looking forward to everything announced so far but this one is at the top of the list.

Four, actually; the fourth is less unusual (Beyer is writing a third Voyager novel to follow Unworthy), but no less exciting :)

I missed that announcement. More good stuff.

It's not evidence; it's pure intuition on my part. This just confirms that it is a reasonable possibility that he wrote the anonymous prologue and epilogue, but doesn't constitute direct evidence that he did.

For what it's worth, Marco referred to "Vanguard-- Declassified!" as "the first time in 22 years [that] I've signed an author contract."

22 years? Interesting. The last fiction writing credit of Marco's I'm aware of was "Best of All" in The Further Adventures of the Joker, which came out in 1990, only 20 years ago. I guess it could've taken 2 years to get from contracts to publication, though that seems an anomalously long time.

Could someone do me a favor and copy the announcement and paste it here? My computer at home died, and the computers at work don't allow access to blogs. Thanks in advance.

Presuming (I hope correctly) that Dayton doesn't mind:
As I've seen this discussed elsewhere by one of the other parties who'll be involved and I've been named as an accomplice, I'm going to go out on a limb here and figure it's save to spill my own share of the beans.

The next installment of the Star Trek: Vanguard saga co-created by former Pocket Books editor Marco Palmieri and fellow scribe David Mack (infinitydog) will be a collection of four novellas under the (working) umbrella title Star Trek: Vanguard - Declassified. This is an idea David and I hatched a few months ago, which was eagerly accepted by our editor at Pocket, Jaime Costas.

For those wondering what the hell I'm talking about when I say "Vanguard," you can find more info here.

The plan is for this collection to be released in mass-market paperback, and indeed count as the sixth book in the current series. Each novella will feature one or more of the series' rather large cast, with tales spanning the length of Operation Vanguard from inception right up to and perhaps even past the events of the fifth book, Precipice. Further, these aren't intended to be throwaway tales, but will be considered integral parts of the storyline and may also even set up situations for the series' next novel-length installments. To be honest, we're in the midst of figuring out a lot of that as I write this. Any or all of what I just typed could change, depending on where any unhinged brainstorming takes us.

"Wait," I can hear you saying out there in the audience, "who the hell is we?" I'm glad you asked. The four novellas will be written by Kevin Dilmore, David Mack, Marco Palmieri, and me.

I don't have a firm handle yet on the release date for the book, but figure on mid to late 2011.

Kevin and I are always excited to team up with David and figure out where Vanguard might go next, and it only seemed right to bring in Marco, given everything he did to help develop the series and act as mentor to me and Kevin (Summon the Thunder was the first work we did for him). Also, I'd argue he knows the series better than anyone except for the MackDaddy himself. This is gonna be about twelve or thirteen kinds of fun.

More for what it's worth: Dave had to cajole/convince Marco to participate; Marco was initially against the idea, and even suggested a couple of viable alternatives.

That was 20 years ago? Yikes, I feel old. I still have my copy.

Awesome friggin' news. I have Reap the Whirlwind - Precipice still in my to-read pile...I may wait to get to them closer to when Declassified is released so that the deets are still fresh in my mind when I get to it.

Interesting to see the Marco will be contributing as a writer. Has he written anything else before? Trek or otherwise??

^See the post immediately above yours. He wrote the story "Best of All" in The Further Adventures of the Joker, a Batman anthology from Bantam (as opposed to a Bantam anthology from Batman). According to its about-the-authors section, that was his writing debut. It's the only writing credit I can find for him.
