Vanguard: Declassified questions (possible spoilers!!)

Claudia

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Right now I'm in the middle of Declassified (specifically the 3rd story by Marco Palmieri) which sheds some much needed light on characters and events but which also raises some continuity-questions.

* Was it ever specifically said in the books that Reyes knows who the spy is? Jetanien wondered in Ward's story why T'Prynn hadn't told Reyes yet - and I kind of started to wonder if she ever told him... at least I can't remember a specific scene which implies that he knows the identity of the spy, but then it has been quite some time since I read Harbinger...

* At the beginning of Palmieri's story it says that Reyes and Desai's relationship was terminated when Reyes was sent to prison. I went back to Open Secrets to reread the final scenes on the station but didn't find any evidence that the relationship was over - quite on the contrary, Desai said that she'd be there when Reyes was released from prison etc. Given Desai's reaction to Reyes' being alive and on the Orion ship and his involvement in the robbery of the artifact (I'll grant her feeling shock, especially knowing she started another relationship while believing him dead, but not her doubting whether he betrayed Vanguard's secrets voluntarily to the Klingons) and this concrete statement in the beginning of the story - was it ever planned in earlier story-outlines to terminate the relationship between them at all, and more specifically on a sour note?

Precipice has the answers as to why Reyes and Desai's relationship
You'll find a lot about Reyes and the Klingons in the next book. Gowron makes threats against Desai. She was in danger .If Reyes doesn't cooperate with the Klingons she'll be sorry. It's a complicated book.Desai wahas her life turne updise down . T'Prynn and Pennington have an important role in the next book as as well as Cervantes Quinn and Bridy Mack storylines con verge and the Klingons as well.
Vanguard Declassified ties into the storielines of the earlier and later Vanguard books Especially important certain characters storylines. I don't want to post too many spoilers but when you read the rest of the series they're all tied together .

Reanok, thanks for your insights - but that doesn't really answer my questions. ;)

Of course, I get that Desai is in turmoil. She believes her lover dead, starts a new (if casual) relationship, learns that Reyes isn't dead (while said new lover is sleeping next door) and then learns that Reyes seemingly collaborated with the Klingons and betrayed Vanguard security details. What I don't get is that there could be any doubt in her (and in everyone else for that matter) that he only told those secrets under extreme duress. It's one thing to actively help Pennington, it's a wholly different story to actually defect.

But that's beside the point - which was whether a previous story outline called for the termination of their relationship at the end of Open Secrets which then was changed (since the relationship wasn't terminated) but which was still adhered to by Palmieri when he wrote his novella (in which he specifically stated that the relationship was terminated before Reyes was transported to Earth).

The reason they terminated their relationship it would've ruined her career in Starfleet as a Jag Officer they say her opinions would've been affected by her relationship with Reyes and would cause her a lot of problems.
Reyes is taken aboard a Starfleet ship to go to prision and captured the Klingons as a hostage and Gorkon tells a Klingon Captain that he'll have Desai killed if Reyes refused to cooperate with him Gorkon was trying to convince the Klingon Chancellor they need to work together to work with the federation or go to war with them.
Her relationship with the security officer was because she thought Reyes was dead. Precipice deals with all these issues.Desai is upset because she feels like she has been betrayed.

Reanok, I read Precipice prior to Declassified (which I finished in the meantime), so I know what happens there with Desai & Jackson, Reyes & Gorkon etc. *g*

IMO, though, they didn't end their relationship. I think the issues about her being tainted in her function as JAG officer because of Reyes were raised at some point - but judging from their final scene together and from how she was willing to leave Starfleet in order to be on Earth (if she doesn't get a Starfleet posting on Earth) just to be close to Reyes... that definitely doesn't point to a terminated relationship.
