Valkyrie

I just watched the movie Valkyrie on DVD today and I say it was one mindblowing film. I thought the plot was fairly well researched for historical accuracy and the suspense and dramatic elements were definitely well depicted.

I actually knew very little about the 20 July 1944 plot to kill Hitler until recently (and I've been something of an amateur World War II buff since boyhood) and was intrigued enough to buy a copy of the film.

I found Kenneth Branagh's performance as General Henning von Tresckow to be one of his better performances (still no equal to his performances in Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing, however).

Any thoughts on this particular film?

I liked everything about this movie, even Tom Cruise's performance which is IMO one of his strongest ever.

I saw it when it came out and liked it well enough. It's basically a heist movie, just with a more serious tone. It does suffer from a bit of an anti-climax obviously since we know what will happen, but the details in the story left me interested, and it was able to be suspenseful the whole way through. I had to remind myself during the bomb scene that Hitler would somehow make it.

Agreed, Cruise was good in this.

This movie was a bit overlooked last year, wasn't it? I recall it didn't do that well.

Yeah I quite like it as well. Definetly well done suspsense about a subject you know how it ends up, but it still works!

I thought it was good but nothing special. The lack of tension did let it down, and whilst Cruise was quite good (although you never get past the fact that he's TC) as in far too many Cruise films it just revolved too heavily around him as Stauffenberg to the exclusion of the rest of the cast.

Gotta love the Hitler salute with his amputed hand though, and it was interesting as a depition of a failed coup.

Saw it when it came out, thought the pacing felt a little weird before the assassination attempt, but afterwards it was right on the money. Don't get the complaints about Cruise. I'll have to review it on DVD sometime.
