Spoilers Vadic and their smoking.

Don't forget Picard being blinded by his desire for revenge against the Borg after having claimed humanity has evolved past such negative emotions, which Lily even actually calls him out on.

Exactly!! I think too many fans buy Picard's frequent sanctimonious ramblings about how certain human traits and flaws are "centuries behind us" as the literal truth about 24th century humanity. What we see with our own eyes across the franchise tells us otherwise, and in fact, stories like "Star Trek First Contact" and "Picard Season 1" show that there really are a lot of people who will call JL out on his bullshit and that he needs to recognize what the real world is all about (including the fact that he himself can be an arrogant, insufferable prig). It's part of what is so endearing to me about those moments for Picard as a character...and actually help me appreciate him as a realistic member of humanity, and not some walking/talking version of Roddenberry's mid-70's convention rhetoric about why Star Trek is so special and prophetic.

Bottom line: I don't like smoking either...but to believe the series or franchise is flawed because it portrays humans doing human things is...well...a bit much.

Don't be mean.
They definitely made smoking seem cool with Rios, I like a lot of new Trek but even I saw that. Look how they even had Guinan relate his last "macho" death over a cigar supposedly.

I'm not happy about it but it isn't new to Trek either. Gene had the doctors in TOS (Boyce and McCoy) acting like bartenders, making alcohol consumption seem cool. As someone with a relative who had their life damaged by alcohol and thankfully is in recovery, I'm not happy about these depictions at all. Guinan could've been running a retro arcade game parlor instead of a bar, but that would have been mocked by much of the audience and says a lot about our society that drinking alcohol is considered more acceptable than video games.

Well, Seven of Nine *was* ordered to find the Changeling’s Boungelliki pot…

Perhaps The Face has got the Changelings addicted to smoking in order to manipulate them in to ‘doing stuff’, just like how the Changelings got the Jem’Hadar addicted to Ketracel White in order to control them as soldiers?

Marta also had one of these cigarettes, it helped to “keep her warm”. Kirk and McCoy smoked it too.

I wonder why we have not seen any more Boungelliki buckets, btw.

Characters on Star Trek Picard smoke, but wasn't the future smokefree in Star Trek?
To be fair, it took me several days to recover from all the second hand smoke I was exposed to when I visited Mostar. I could see why someone from that location would look towards a smoke free future with high aspirations.

What the heck is "Boungelliki"?

[Edit] Okay, so I did some quick Gewgling, and it's from a Matalas tweet. (A reply to the very same Timofnine.) But he's clearly making a made-up-word joke.

I guess I am the only one who assumed she was smoking weed...that looked like a pre-roll :)

Chronic pain and trauma...she needs it to take the edge off.
