USS Vengeance name

TrickyDickie

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Anyone know what the inspiration was for that name, when they made Into Darkness?

Was it this:

or was it a ;) to this:

or was it something else?

Wasn't it designed by "John Harrison"? Because that's literally the first name that comes to mind if Khan was gonna name something.

Admiral Marcus was probably like, "Lol if it makes him happy..."

according to memory-beta the ship was already under construction when harrison showed up on the scene. he was instrumental in its completion but didn't design (or presumably name) the thing.

Dear Diary,

I found it a little odd that the new guy whose family I held hostage so he would work for me opted to name the ship "USS I'm Going To Crush Marcus' Head", so we met in the middle with a more ambiguous and moustache-twirling "Vengeance". Well, big day tomorrow. Gotta go.

So far the only good thing to come out of the JJVerse. I want that ship to come over to the Prime and be a Section 31 stealth ship.

We need to speculate first on whether the ship was the first of her kind.

I mean, she probably was not the only one of her kind. Why would Marcus choose to go to war before the completion of a mighty warfleet? The construction project existed, and not in great secrecy, either, even if Kirk was not told (desktop models and all). And Marcus was ready to throw away the Fleet's newest flagship, suggesting these as such big ships were immaterial to his ultimate (and immediate) war designs.

So, was the Vengeance, apparently still unfinished, perhaps the fifth dreadnought in the Fleet? And was her name thus just the fifth in a series, with four more "sensible" names preceding hers, perhaps in a classic warship theme of "alliterative qualities"? Vigilance, Vindictive, Vanquisher, Volunteer, Vengeance...?

Or are we dealing with the Vengeance class of dreadnoughts here? Or even the Dreadnought class of medium cruisers or whatnot?

The whole concept for the ship was just absurd. It was partly designed by Khan. Someone from the 20th century. It’s twice the size and faster than the Enterprise but yet can be operated by only 12 people?
The whole thing felt like it was written by a 10 year old as a ship that can beat the JJPrise but I still love it.

Trimming down warship crews is one of today's trends; STID is a nice example of potential consequences, that is, ease of maverick action.

Although no doubt every ship in Starfleet can be operated by a handful. After all, every hero ship has, with only the badly blasted E-nil-refit ever giving trouble or requiring effort. And Marcus lost because his superior ship had inferior/insufficient crew, allowing intruders to intrude and saboteurs to sabotage; in normal over-the-counter ops, she would no doubt have been crewed by thousands and been immune to these attacks.

It is also inherent in the plot that the supervillain would have superships to go with his superego. The villain would not exist if he lacked these resources.

(And yeah, I love the ship, too. Despite everything.)

I was wondering / speculating more about what the inspiration was for the name as it applied to those who made the film, rather than in-universe.

I'm guessing they brought in 3 elements:

Previous ships with the name
The old ad from TWOK
Harrison's motivation

And not necessarily in that order of significance....

yeah, also she was referred to as the "black enterprise" for much of pre-production. she was probably named after the script was finalized and themes of the film itself were nailed down.

Vindicate as in "show or prove to be right" or in the old sense of "deliver, rescue" from the Klingon threat Marcus perceives.

Ah, okay. So it would have made sense in Marcus’s mind. Because only Kirk was vindicated in the end. Thematically, it kind of makes sense that Vengeance would be Marcus and Khan’s lovechild since it’s their primary motivator in the film.

Plus, it is the name of actual ships with a fairly long history. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vengeance

EDIT: One of the reasons I absolutely love Into Darkness is that it very much is a classic Trekkian lesson about human nature. The name Vengeance is totally unnecessary to the theme but works either way.
