The Baton Rouge was a starship class that the Goldbergs speculated was the predecessor of Kirk's Constitution when they wrote the Spaceflight Chronology, right about when the first movie premiered. Rick Sternbach did the art. Somewhat surprisingly, the Baton Rouge was specified as having a bigger hull than Kirk's newer ship, even when the trend in real-world warship design has been towards larger ships in a given category. Then again, "leaner and meaner" has always sounded appealing, too...
