USS Gibraltar, Excelsior class (1701-B) reimagined

  • The Bussard obstruction bothers me too. But at least the impulse engines aren't exhausting directly into them like on some forehead-smackable canon ships.
  • The nacelle pylons are too thick, especially on the bottom, and the 90 degree near-equidistant L-shape is less sophisticated than the rest of the design. Same with the near-perfect circle of the stardrive looked at from the front/back compared to all the curves and shapes at play with the rest of the ship. It's like an egg...or the Galaxy Quest ship with a saucer on top.
  • The stardrive could use more phasers.
  • I think maybe the aft shuttlebay area could stretch a little bit longer aft, but, eh. Could use more detailing in the surrounding area.
  • There's some kind of optical trick going on for me where it looks like the saucer is angled downward because of its connection at the neck. Maybe it's because the saucer is more detailed than the stardrive and the eye keeps being drawn to it. But, I'd either give the top of the neck the tinniest bit of a lip jutting forward toward the saucer, or, conversely, go in the other direction and make the angle at which the top of the neck connects to the saucer more steep and looks more vertical.
  • Also the impulse exhausts are a little too big from aft and the nacelles a little too perfect rectangular from aft.
Eh, some thoughts. The side and the bottom views especially look nice to me. The nacelles from the sides look really nice, the pylons too. Sometimes when fans make ships the new parts they create aren't as complex or original as the parts they're reusing, and these nacelles for example are wonderful. I could easily see them on another canon ship. Some of the work on the neck too I really like. And the shape from the side overall is really satisfying. It's both a "tall" ship, like the various (pre-Disc) Enterprises, but also a stout horizontal ship, like the Excelsior. Beautiful.

I think you mean the pylons, not the nacelles. Yeah they're more inspired by the Enterprice-C than the Excelsior.

As for the engineering section, it was hard to project but it's actually flattened on the top, so the middle part of the circle is higher than it normally would be on my other designs.

Thank you for your comments.

Yeah, corrected to “nacelle pylons,” thanks. Seriously, this is one of the better ships I’ve seen in a while.
