USA distribution -CBS All Access discussion

Sorry, no saving gold pressed latinum for you. ;) The CBS tile in the network section on Hulu, identifies the rerun package of shows (which includes the old Treks) CBS sells to them. It is not an add on for the CBS All Access service. :)

So someone mentioned to me this weekend "Did you hear there will be a new Star Trek show?'
When we started discussing it, they didn't know it would be on CBS all Access, nor have they ever heard of CBS all Access until I explained it to them. This is the third such conversation i personally have had.

I just don't think the general populace is going to here of Discovery. if they do they will look on TV, not see it and forget about it (and probably start watching Orville).

Anyone else have similar experiences?

I have not, but I am completely unsurprised that this happened. Keeping this show exclusively on CBS All Access just seems like a bad business model. There are too many other larger streaming titans to compete against. I suspect only the established fanbase will really pony up the money for yet another streaming service, just for one show, but if they want to attract new people to the franchise, this is the absolute worst possible way of going about doing it. They already are using Netflix outside the US for distribution. Why the hell not just use them here as well. Then they might see some new viewers. I hope the show lasts, but I get the impression that it might not go beyond a season 2.

Because cbs is trying to protect their future when linear tv dies.

And there is a lot more then one show on cbsaa. It isn't even the only original show on there with more coming.

Right now I think some additional streaming companies is a good thing. I don't want to see a world where there isn't much linear tv and everything is under the control of just 2-3 players. Competition is good for the consumer.

Not if nobody knows about it, it isn't. CBS has done a piss-poor job of marketing DSC up until recently, and I fear that @galad2003's experience will become more the rule than the exception and it may already be too late to build that kind of momentum.

History: A lot of people believed that Betamax was a better format than VHS back in the 80's. It died because Sony's marketing sucked and it didn't hold as much recording time as VHS tapes. Was it really better than VHS? I believe so, based on what I've read about the technology (and this is coming from someone who hates Sony products as a general rule). Did it matter that it was actually better? Nope. Same thing more recently between BluRay and HDDVD. HDDVD may have been the better tech from a compression standpoint, but BluRay (ironically, by Sony) become the de facto industry standard (IIRC) because it had better interactive menu features than HDDVD did.

Now: CBS is following Sony's earlier business model. It may be ahead of the curve conceptually by forcing people to abandon "linear TV" but there are too many other popular and more well-established brands that people are more likely to stay with because most people feel change just for the sake of change is not enough for them to open their wallets further. Competition only works if the CONSUMER believes something else is better. Nobody gives a shit what CBS thinks about its own press and technology, because of course they're going to say it's all that and a bag of chips.

I think it will help that the first episode is going to air on CBS (old school tv) right after (iirc) a football game. Then I'm sure they'll have a "see the next episode right now on CBS All Access!" or something to that effect, and hopefully the first episode will be smashing enough to get people to download the app.

It is still too far out to do a big PR push just yet to the general public. Do that too soon and people forget about it before it airs. The main marketing campaign for people outside of fandom hasn't started yet. When it does you'll likely see a lot of ads on CBS for it. I expect when we get to the start of the fall TV season is when you'll see them start rolling out the ads for star trek.

That is exactly what the did with good fight. In fact immediately after episode 1 airs, you can watch episode 2 on All-Access. So if you like episode 1 and like it then you can watch more immediately.

I hope you're right. Believe me, I REALLY do. But it wasn't too long ago that everyone was getting really nervous that CBS wasn't putting anything out about the show other than tiny little blurbs and hints from the cast or the occasional photo from the set. They are finally gearing up the marketing engine and I really hope that they will be able to effectively raise public awareness about the show and the streaming service efficiently enough.

And I really hope that CBS's streaming servers are ready to get hit by all the people wanting to watch after the first week and their whole network doesn't melt down into a molten pile of slag. CBS All Access has been around for a little while, and I recall seeing reviews of high network latency and poor streaming quality a year or so ago when they first announced the show. They better be investing a metric ass-ton of money into their infrastructure to boost its integrity. It may be the most amazing show in the world, but nobody will know if their servers swallow their faces under the heavy load.

Yeah I think that's what they have planned. The first two episodes will be available on CBSAA, and the first episode airs on tv.

Also The Good Fight is an amazing show. :bolian:

As much as I can be a CBSAA apologist, I will say the audio/video quality of their Star Trek shows is not as good as Netflix. That said, CBSAA is Netflix quality with shows like Good Fight, which is their first CBSAA exclusive show. So, if that's anything to go on, DSC will look and sound fantastic. But yeah, they really need to get their shit together with the older Trek shows, especially if subscriber retention is something they care about.

That's especially troubling, considering they own the rights to all of it and should have the HD masters easily at hand. It may belie a bigger problem on their end regarding the fore-mentioned infrast4ructure. Just simply can't handle the load.

Have you noticed any kind of improvement on overall video quality in recent months at all, like more shows being transmitted in full progressive HD, or are they still doing super-lossy high-compression?
