There is a trailer at this link

He is the cinematographer, editor, writer, actor, composer again!
I will see it at the cinema and probably buy the Blu-ray. After owning "Primer" on DVD it was worth multiple views.
Upstream Color premieres at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and will debut in New York in April before hitting digital and cable platforms.
self distributed. Cool.

The io9 article

was wrong in the 2nd to be released feature from Shane 2 1/2 years ago.
That film "A Topiary" is dead in development.

Looking forward to this film in the spring.

No replies yet on this thread?!

I've only watched the trailer and it should doesn't give too much away. very interesting sound design.

from reviews about the story
James Rocchi for MSN: “If you open your perspective a little—and your feelings a lot—then it works as a singular achievement on par with, and in the same mold as, Tarkovsky‘s Solaris or Stalker—a story that uses speculative ideas and para-scientific plot points to not only tell a delicate, fascinating love story but also to inspire you to re-think your story of what love means and how it works.”

Time Out Chicago‘s A.A. Dowd notes that “while there’s no trace of pseudo-scientific shoptalk—the film communicates its most outlandish elements through purely visual means—this is unmistakably the product of the same mind that dreamt up Primer. The aversion to audience hand-holding, the disorientation tactics and the use of science fiction for its metaphoric possibilities all mark Upstream Color as a Carruth joint.”

“He is somewhat tight-lipped about what he was doing during his time away from the spotlight. He speaks of an ambitious sci-fi project called A Topiary as ‘the thing I basically wasted my whole life on.’ The frustration of that unrealized project seems to have spurred his autodidact polymath instinct to learn something new—how to market and release his own film—rather than depend on others to do things for him.

I still would like to see a screenplay for "A Topiary" but I'm sure from Carruth it would pale to the visuals anyway since it is a sci-fi film.

for April & May's release of "Upstream Color":
The film premieres at Sundance this month and Carruth told the LA Times that he plans on self-distributing the film via “Cable VOD, iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, Hulu, Xbox, Sony Entertainment Network, VUDU and Netflix and DVD/Blu-ray” — so like, every platform there is. ‘Upstream Color’ premieres at the IFC Film Center on April 5, followed by a 20-market platform release, and then in May we’ll see it hit streaming via the platforms mentioned above.

Even though in May it will be available to stream I figure I'm going to watch it at least 3-5 times and would appreciate an audio commentary so I think I'll do the Blu-ray instead of watching i a few times with a 24-hour or 30-day rental during that period only.

It just won the Sundance U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Shane Carruth & Johnny Marshall's sound design.

My wife saw it at Sundance, she was there as an actor in a short film. She liked it. I don't know if she loved it--I'm really anxious to see it.

I'm definitely interested in this. I loved Primer. Carruth's a talented guy, and knows how to generate a spooky vibe.

Perhaps this will get PRIMER released on Blu-Ray. Hopefully this film will be as good as Carruth's earlier effort. I'm looking forward to it.

Since "Primer" was shot on Super16 film and released on DVD with 2 audio commentaries I don't see the need for this on Blu-ray. This film did not have stellar visuals or dialogue sound. Going from Lossy Dolby Digital to a lossless track would be pretty minimal considering the low budget origins of the film.
It is available on iTunes but i don't think in HD either.
Were you hoping for its release to just get another scifi film on HD or released to consumers to help the genre or specifically because HD would show off the Super16 source any better?

I own the DVD and am fine with it on DVD. Carruth shot Upstream Color on a Panasonic GH2 $700. camera in HD and i'll want to see it in HD.

cool way of keeping us interested:

The full score is available now to stream, and also for pre-order on vinyl, which comes with a DRM-free digital download. The good news is that the track titles, which can be read in the streaming embed below, don’t give away anything about the plot.

It will be on DVD/Blu-ray in May according to slashfilm.

The reviews -- especially the reviewers I trust the most -- really liked it. I am asking for the Blu-Ray for Xmas.

I saw it. It's definitely different. You have to pay close attention to the entire film and probably have to watch it twice (or more) to figure out exactly what is going on. I'll be honest - I had to look up an FAQ to figure out all the plot points. I don't even want to give it away here. You really just need to go in to it blind and let the movie play out.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. I didn't really care about any of the characters and I was kind of frustrated with not knowing what was going on. I wasn't a big fan of the score, either. I know that's been a big selling point of the movie, but I just wasn't that impressed.

^ I felt the same way. Someone at the IMDb described this as "an extended film school project gone awry" and I agree. It's extremely artsy to the point where I didn't know what was going on at times. I had to read up on the film afterwards to get some clarification. While doing so, I see that a lot of people did manage to follow the movie and I was surprised to see that it got a lot of positive reviews, including an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite not being able to understand a lot of it, I didn't find it boring. It held my attention mostly because I was waiting for something to click. In the end, it's worth checking out and I'd love to know what others think of it. I'm even willing to give it another go someday.
