Not so much politics as economics. The problem with Tribune's shows is that the execs prioritized cheapness above all, so rather than spend the money to invest in quality writers and production values and build an audience for a show that would profit in the long run, they'd make their shows on the cheap and fire the good showrunners in favor of cheaper replacements, so the storytelling lacked consistency and the quality degenerated.
