Updating TOS

Let's have updated versions of Casablanca and Citizen Kane while we're at it.

Well, I think the Casablanaca was kind of experimented with in a little picture called Foodfight. Not sure if you have heard of it.

I guess you've never heard of the 1955 and 1983 TV versions of Casablanca. The 1955 version was set in 1955 rather than during WWII.

Well, we already have one successful updated version of TOS; they've made three movies in the last decade.

Discovery may well seque into a kind of TOS reboot after five or six years. Why not?

Right now HBO is trying to generate one or more Westeros-based spinoff shows from GoT, and supposedly something like that has been discussed regarding Westworld. There's no reason that if Discovery is a success for CBS All-Access and Netflix that they wouldn't at some point want to leverage it into another series, and given the setting and characters a series about Kirk and Spock aboard the Enterprise would have to be a contender.

If it means more "Star Trek" on screen, why not?

Since the JJ-verse has the whole partial reboot angle covered, and Star Trek Continues has the whole authentic-looking continuation with new actors angle covered, and Discovery has a new show in the Prime timeline covered. that really just leaves either an Enterprise B show or a hard reboot a la Battlestar Galactica, only less grimdark. What would that look like?
I love the clean, bright primary colours.

It makes such a nice change from the modern drab and dark interpretations.
The New Paradigm Daleks would like to hire you as their new PR director.

I agree. I was watching a preview for Wonder Woman the other day, I could barely define what was going on. It was too dark.

Discovery is also drab (thus far) visually. It won't last five or six years.

I'm not sure if it's such a hot idea to do something like that to TOS. The Remastered versions alone caused enough uproar, something like this would blow up the internet.

I've also noticed that the Mona Lisa is looking a bit old fashioned too. Maybe add a hoody and stick a mobile phone in her hand and a piercing in her eyebrow and nose, you know modernise her a bit. :)
Also, update the Magna Carta in to txt spk so 'the kids' can understand it.

Yes, because it does not appeal to those of the moment, it must be bad.

You know these things come from the past, why can't we just let them be?

Exactly. If some are so narrow minded that anything that does not share the same design or express the same tone, thought or view of those only knowing (or caring to know) the here and now, then they are free to explore something else, but original works of art had specific reasons behind their creation with the influences of an equally specific period of time. That did not include a thought toward or need for constant revisions or so-called improvements.

Why not? They're black and white, and the characters do not appeal to current viewer sensibilities. Full steam ahead!

AS a commercial prospect, a new update of TOS is almost a no-brainer.. last time I checked, CBS pays almost no rights fees to the actors or estates.
To them it's almost pure profit every time TOS, TOS/R is run or sold...So an update of the bridge displays etc. may be in the future
(4K or 8K remaster anyone?)

in several cases during the TOS /R development,
CBS Digital wanted to change certain displays but were constrained by time and budget..

So. What's wrong with that? Are people really incapable of viewing the product in the context of the time in which it was made? I bet you people don't even enjoy silent films!

Trekkies: How dare you set a new Trek series in the TOS era! Give us something new! Set it 10,000 years after the Dominion War or nothing at all!!
Also Trekkies: Abrams-Trek is not my Star Trek! It's a loud explosion of CGI nonsense! Star Trek is about the stories!
Also Trekkies: Why don't you just remake TOS so it looks better?
