Some how I'm hoping for a more updated "non-Rainbow button" control consoles. I'm a huge fan of the original series and lets face it we over look its blatant 60s-ness, because it is such a classic and the stories remain entertaining even today...
Let's try to remember-
The look of the Enterprise was supposed to be the look of the future.
It was THREE CENTURIES down the road from the time the show originally aired.
Style can change in a LOT of ways over such a period.
Ever heard the line "What's old is new again"?
The TOS look could very easily be accepted as "the look of that era". As the "Mirror" two-parter on ENTERPRISE showed, the original designs, colors, uniforms, etc., can be used today and not look dated. (You can even update them slightly and not have it look like it violates anything that came before.)
The new film should simply recast the roles, and leave everything else alone, and move on.
The handheld equipment, uniforms, ship designs and interiors...it all should look just as we know it should (for whatever period, pre-WNMHGB or TOS) it's suppossed to be.
It'll work.
All that's needed is for the filmmakers to believe that and go with what's already established.
The thing WILL work. People will NOT walk out because it looks like the 60s show, nor will attendance drop off for that reason.
If anything, it might even drum up interest in the original episodes as people come to see the film, and decide they want more NOW.
