Updated Technology In ST-11......

K'riq Sa

Commodore
Will they update the technology in ST-11 to reflect the new advances in technology such as, will the computers be based more around the new interactive screens that Microsoft and others have come out with (ala Minority Report)? Espically on the Bridge? Will the away teams be fitted with iPhones as communicators? Will there be bigger breast-implants in the green Orion women? Better space suits?

Robots?

Yes. Sulu will check his GURPS, and Chekov will be whistling along to his iPod. Spock will use his Wii to practice Vulcan training exercises.

But seriously... still yes. :)

Now that could fill an entire 120-minute movie all on its own.

And, ironically, one that would probably do better box office than Trek 11 'cuz all the Nip/Tuck crowd would flock to see it! ;)

Cheers!

Alex

Yeah, but at some point quaint technology just doesn't cut it anymore. For instance the Holographics Technology was introduced at a time when the thought of Holographic encounters could only be imagined. How do you re-imagine aliens into something that will make us, with our over the top animation on regular tv, go Whoa!

I keep hearing that the Enterprise bridge will retain much the same look of the old 1960s sets and the more recent Constitution-class remakes in DS9 and ENTERPRISE, but will employ flatscreen computers to display the blinking lights and readouts and Spock's holographic slot-viewer/scanner at his station might actually be seen from the inside out this time around.

That would be a nice touch indeed. A simple thing, but one that appeals to the old-time fan in me.

If they can somehow mesh designs from the original bridge and the one seen in TMP... I'd be a happy camper.

;)

Some how I'm hoping for a more updated "non-Rainbow button" control consoles. I'm a huge fan of the original series and lets face it we over look its blatant 60s-ness, because it is such a classic and the stories remain entertaining even today.

But a few minor updates would be welcomed. I don't want BSG style phones on cords or any B/S like that but still.

Let's try to remember-

The look of the Enterprise was supposed to be the look of the future.

It was THREE CENTURIES down the road from the time the show originally aired.

Style can change in a LOT of ways over such a period.

Ever heard the line "What's old is new again"?

The TOS look could very easily be accepted as "the look of that era". As the "Mirror" two-parter on ENTERPRISE showed, the original designs, colors, uniforms, etc., can be used today and not look dated. (You can even update them slightly and not have it look like it violates anything that came before.)

The new film should simply recast the roles, and leave everything else alone, and move on.

The handheld equipment, uniforms, ship designs and interiors...it all should look just as we know it should (for whatever period, pre-WNMHGB or TOS) it's suppossed to be.

It'll work.

All that's needed is for the filmmakers to believe that and go with what's already established.

The thing WILL work. People will NOT walk out because it looks like the 60s show, nor will attendance drop off for that reason.

If anything, it might even drum up interest in the original episodes as people come to see the film, and decide they want more NOW.

I don't think it will work. It doesn't matter if filmakers believe that old-looking tech can be futuristic. What matters is what the movie-goers will think, I don't think people will buy that crap looking futuristic.

TOS's tech looks and sounds so ridiculous now. Big buckets meant to do simple scanning tasks, fake robot voices for the compuper, printing paper, spiral computer displays. Where are the monitors? Where are the data readouts? Big bright bulky buttons are hardly ergonomic and in no way look like the future we're headed toward.

Star Trek should look futuristic. The tech should look futuristic. If Star Trek is not concerned about appearing futuristic, and is only concerned with being nostalgic, then it's not Star Trek.

^ It can also be argued that the TOS-era is a classic segment of television (and in-universe Trek history), as well as being a product of a pulp sci-fi era, and should look as such. If the producers want to do more 'real' tech with a modern feel, they should work in another Trek era. Or, better still, make a reboot.

Since Star Trek is a television and filmic franchise, it should look how it is supposed to feel. If it is supposed to feel 'gritty', 'dark' and 'real' (which I believe is what Abrams is wanting, sadly for me and my Trek interests), then fair enough. If it is supposed to feel 'fun', 'imaginative', 'nostalgic' and different to all the other modern science fiction out there, then it should look like the era its is supposed to look like and retain the feel of its original source material.

But, regardless of what internet folk like me want, Abrams and his lot will very likely be updating things to look more 2008 than something that came out of the 1960's. That's the 'in thing' to do with science fiction these days.

Problem, if it feels too nostalgic that will likely put potential new fans off.

This movie is to renew the franchise for the future and importantly make money, not just to please existing fans

Best thing is a balance of the 2, maintain enough so the existing fans get that sence of nostalga but not so that new fans see it as a sickly 2 hours for fanboys

Gotta agree... keeping the TOS styles around, such as in ENT's Mirror Darkly eps, is pure nostalgia.

Star Trek needs to be redesigned, needs to be new. I feel that holding to the Berman/Braga era history things, while fun, would be nothing but an artistic ball and chain to Treks future.

After 20 years of Bermanverse aestetics, Tek and costumes from TOS WOULD seem fresh and new. Kid's who have seen nothing but the bland costumes and cookie cuttter sets of the 24th century wouldn't know what hit them with a bridge exploding with rich colors.

And judging by how kids like to mod things these days, from xboxes to cars, with all colors of LEDS, I think the TOS bridge, done with modern construction techniques, would be, not only accepted, but after 20 years of Bermsnstyle sameness, welcomed with open arms.

I really don't think they'd have to change the design much to make everybody happy. Drop the computer voice, lose the paper printout. But a design somewhat familiar could still work.

Relics, Trials and Tribblations, In a Mirror Darkly, New Voyages, Exeter, Farragut, IDW TOS comix, TAS online comix, etc are nostalgia.

We want to bring in new fans.

JJ & Co are doing what ADB has already done with their Prime Directive RPG.

Its 2008 not 1966.

I don't think anybody knows how technology will look in more than 200 years from now, counting in a major devastation after which technology might be re-invented and various alien influences in the process.

I think TOS tech under a certain perspective looks extremely plausible anyway. We're dealing with space, right? Anything can happen and many hostile races around. I'd sure want my equipment work under a variety of scenarios after which conventional tech would be rendered useless.(fire a phaser set on stun on an ipod and tell me if it'll work after)

Sturdy-bulky might be the outcome of including all those safety protocols(fire/ice/vacuum/decompression/etc).

Also let's factor in Trek has it's own aesthetic and in addition, it's more like a similar universe to ours but surprisingly close nevertheless, however not identical(else explain to me why there's no Eugenic wars or the other events(close enough for the Bell riots 2012, Carbon Creek etc)not happening.(And I can't shut my brain to the level of believing it's concealed from the public or similar excuses). I suppose one can say there is a divergence between Trek and our world, and tech might be influenced by this divergence.

I'd be perfectly ok and any non-fan should be as well if they keep that look, it's the look of the story. Not everything has to be applied to modern world circumstances to be acceptable. That's why it's labeled sci-fi after all.
