Unused Andorian Ship Model

Years ago when Enterprise was on the air I remember coming across and article about an Andorian ship model. I can't remember exactly but I assume it was made by one of the big boys like Greg Jein or someone. It was apparently a design for an Andorian ship before they came up with the design used on Enterprise.

From what I remember the ship looked a bit like the Botany Bay with the same sort of octagonal hull and conning tower. Does anyone else remember this and have any idea where the article went that had those photos?

I may recall what you're talking about... but I don't think it had anything to do with Enterprise as all the visual effects in that show were CGI... nary a model to be seen.

But from your description, I assume you may well be talking about this bad boy, a conjectural Andorian model I believe built by the late Thomas Sasser way back in 2000.

Is that the one?

Yes! That's it! Holy crap. I've been looking for that for years. That's probably why I couldn't find it, I had all my information wrong. I knew it wasn't on the show but I couldn't remember exactly who made it.

It's a visually interesting design, but it doesn't really fit the Trek aesthetic. It would look more at home in the Gerry Anderson universe.

Those side windows on the conning tower remind me of the windows on the neck of the Constitution class.

It also seems a bit large for a early era ship. But then again if Andorians were a space faring species for longer than humans they might have bigger ships.

I dunno, it doesn't seem too far out of line with Trek esthetic to me. In fact, given what official Andorian ships look like, I can see this being a predecessor ship, from, let's say, the 18th or 19 Century.

My problem with the "Trek Aesthetic" is that not every alien culture regardless of the technological level is going to produce ships which match that aesthetic.

One thing Babylon Five nailed was having alien ships looking like they came from alien cultures and technology- different styles of construction, engineering and what looks good to their eye. Some very nice alien designs for Voyager were shelved because they did not fit that Trek Aesthetic- too organic looking was one comment.
