I worked with a guy who believed that the hoverboards in BACK TO THE FUTURE II were real, even though I showed him the visible wires and compositing artifacts on Laserdisc—to say nothing of the fact that such technology would remake many aspects of our world. "It only works on toys," was his counter argument.

Lots of people believe lightsabers are real, too.

As part of an April Fools' prank, the University of Michigan School of Engineering posted a video to the school website, showcasing a cloaking paint in the midst of development.
