Stargate Universe executive producer Joseph Mallozzi introduced two new writers/producers in his weblog recently. They are Remi Aubuchon and Linda McGibney. They’re joining Carl Binder, Robert C. Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, and Brad Wright in the writers’ room.
In his introductions, Mallozzi gave some of the credentials each new writer/producer carries. Aubuchon has worked on projects for Caprica, 24, Persons Unknown, Summerland, and The Lyon’s Den; McGibney, Homicide: Life on the Streets, Family Law, and Chicago Hope.
Currently, we have information on the first 12 episodes of Season Two. Based on Mallozzi’s entries, Aubuchon is writing the script for the ninth episode, while McGibney is working with Mallozzi to bring in the mid-season two-parter. The titles of these episodes aren’t currently known, but it’s pretty much guaranteed that they’ll be single-worded to keep the trend going.

It sounds the second season is moving along nicely.

There are also 3 freelance writers who contributed scripts to the second half of season 1 (Denis McGrath, Jeff Vlaming, and Barbara Marshall).

Caprica's co-creator? That doesn't bode well.

Whether or not you like Caprica, he's not involved in the day-to-day productiion. He just co-wrote the pilot episode with RDM.

Anyone involved on a writing level with any aspect of Moore's shows could not help but improve SG:U.

Agreed.

I've been following Caprica as much as my schedule will allow and while it has yet to grab me the way BSG did, I'm still finding it quite interesting.

I tried watching an episode of Stargate Universe last night on Hulu. I couldn't get past the show open.

SGU has been pretty much consistent about it's puerile attempts at drama since it's pilot, and I see no reason to believe it will dial that shit back anytime soon.

Which is great, because it's so laughably bad it's more entertaining than any other show that's considered genuinely funny on television. I can just imagine the producers stomping their feet and yelling "No! I'm all growed up now!" as they scribble down the next episode onto a sheet of construction paper.

The same program you haven't watched since the pilot?

Caprica's pilot was infinitely better written than anything I've seen from this series - without being good enough to keep me engaged. Needless to say, SG:U's pilot failed on that score as well.

Nice try, though. Unless you're telling me that I missed the entire SG:U creative team being sacked and the series going off in an entirely different direction and with enormously heightened sophistication after the pilot.

I wonder how it'll go, the wannbe writer in me wishes I could come up with some ideas and try to write something for this, but oh well. In any case, I am looking forward to more episodes.

Since he left the show before it became a regular series, it doesn't bode anything.

He managed to get a job on a show that, while fairly boring so far (and that includes the pilot), does have intelligence and ambition to rise above the usual garbage level. That should mean something.

Now that Robert Knepper's been cast in S2, I'll come back then and give this sucker another shot. By then, the new guys should either have settled in and start making their mark, or they'll just be swallowed by the general mediocrity. Who knows, maybe they'll make the difference at long last?

You mean the show where the writers kept making shit up has they went along? Yeah they probably won't improve it if they bring that kind of work ethic to SGU.

Maybe it'll mix. I mean, yeah, winging it has it's problems, but they were laying the groundwork to end SG-1 and start up Atlantis back in season 3, and then spent another six years stretching out one or two seasons of plot arc.

Under these circumstances, I'm more than willing to give SG:U another shot. I just hope they get rid of the damned "soul-swapping" rocks once and for all.

Not wanting to diminish the strength of Ron Moore's work, but Caprica has been distinctly average so far. I'm much happier now that Universe is returning next week. The first 10 episodes, which I've recently rewatched, are fantastic. Kinda surprised some fans have quit watching already!
