United States Post Office taking suggestions...

I know that Australia Post manages to make a profit. I wonder how much it services differs from the US Post Office.

I believe that the USPS delivers mail using vans whereas the majority of the mail in Australia is delivered by posties on motorbikes (bigger packages and register post are delivered by van).

Australia Post cut out Saturday deliveries many years ago.

Smaller "post offices" are usually located in private newsagencies.

Australia Post sells many items in their larger post offices such as computers, printers and software, gift items and toys.

Bills can be paid at post offices and Australia Post provides some banking services as well.

1. cut sat out 2. cut man power 3 cut pay! when you too fat you go on a diet! when you spending too much you go on a money diet! love dr;)

How much would they save by giving themselves one more day to deliver the mail?

I know they have talked about it in Sweden, since they are obliged to deliver all mail the next day, which requires transport by air, which is quite expensive.

The solution is simple: raise prices to levels that cover costs. It's not rocket science.

This is indeed a great idea. People will then use the post office even less than they already do, forcing an even quicker demise of this outdated institution.

Unpopular opinion, and I do leave in rural area: Ditch rural route delivery outside the metro area, convert those addresses over to PO Boxes.

As do I, and I agree.

Plus it would take an amendment to the Constitution.

why?
The running and maintenance of a postal service is written in the constitution, along with the running and maintenance of a military

clint g, your understanding and comprehension of the Constitution is lacking. Stop getting your talking points/education from Talk Radio  This is not the first time you've demonstrated this.

Overall, the USPS is laden with pork and is a Government bureaucracy rife with abuse. IIRC, back in 2001/2002 there was outrage over the incoming Postmaster General throwing a party to the tune of some $300 Million -- all at the expense of taxpayers. I've been deluged in recent months with bulk mail that has a stamp on it noting the cost was less than 44-cents. The USPS should raise the prices on bulk mail rates, especially since politicians love to send bulk junk mail. Cutting a day of service? Maybe, but I don't know about that. As far as FedEx and UPS taking over -- not going to happen as the cost of delivering a letter, plus dedicated carriers would drive up cost. Those organizations are much more efficient at bulk package delivery.
