uniforms

I liked the TWOK uniform (even though it probably wasn't as practical as the ENT one)

The TWoK uniforms would make pretty good dress uniforms, but have never really seemed to me to be practical duty/work uniforms.

Indeed. Conceptually, I think TMP had the best "system" but it wasn't executed well with the actual designs.

I personally hate the way the uniforms were handled in most all of trek... Very few times did the production think out a system based on actual real world military and paramilitary systems. :vulcan:

Although I disliked the series, I thought enterprise made the best stab at this - desert uniforms for deserts, pockets to carry things etc.

Agreed, the ENT uniforms were the most realistic/practical looking uniforms in a ST series to date. A duty uniform that could be out on quickly, and had places to carry stuff. A seperate dress uniform. Variant uniforms for different environments.

I agree. ENT had some of the best sets and costume design. The NX-01 interiors and the Starfleet uniforms were very realistic and practical. Using the current NASA jumpsuits as inspiration was a great way to go.

I always liked the somewhat more casual jacket that went with the TWoK-TUC uniforms - the one Scotty wore in II-IV and Kirk had in V.

Oh, definitely. that bomber jacket was awesome.

People,

I've seen those proposed GEN uniforms and I don't really like them. It would have been preferable to keep the main cast wearing their TNG jacket-and-pants uniforms. As a result of the costume switch between the dropped designs, then some of the major cast wearing ill-fitting DSN uniforms, they looked awful.

Of all the movie uniforms, the three best were, in this order, the bomber jacket from TSFS that Scotty and later, Kirk wore; the standard TWOK-TUC uniform; and Kirk's admiral uniform from TMP.

Red Ranger

^ Yup, I agree totally with Red Ranger there. I also liked the short-sleeve uniforms Kirk and some others wore in The Motion Picture.

What they SHOULD have done is make the DS9 coveralls an "option" uniform right from season 5. The real military has several duty uniforms for various purposes and it makes dramatic sense as well to be able to dress the characters in different costumes for particular scenes. Most common comment I get from non-trek people " why do they wear the same clothes every day?" Seems pretty stupid when you actually hear someone ask that. TMP had the best and most practical costuming of all the films, with a complete variety of uniforms from dressy to casual to "get-under-the-hood". And the propulsion crew even wore hazard suits when the Warp Drive was on. It all just made sense and lent to the dramatic presentation by being able to costume the actors to set the tone for particular scenes. -And note that Nimoy has that high-necked undershirt through the whole film to make him look "uptight".

I most definitely agree.

Agreed that the ENT uniforms were the most practical, but did they have to look like Seaquest cast-off's?
What would have been so wrong with giving Archer&co. gold/red/blue blouson jackets, black cargo pants?
Why not make ST ENTERPRISE look like um,STAR TREK?

I agree.

The entire GEN cast should have worn the DS9 suits. Ironically, Voyager, and Enterprise finally did this. :D

We could pretend they were an "option" ever since season 1, really. It's just that Picard ran a really tight ship where everybody had to be dressed in their best Class A's all the time, or at least all the time they were out in the public and not working under a greasy plasma manifold. Nothing less would do for the Federation flagship...

And by ST:GEN, Picard had finally come to believe in Casual Fridays.

Those DS9 uniforms from the time that TNG started would have a black stripe added to the shoulders like first TNG uniforms but the colours reversed.

TMP actually did have decent uniforms, if only the colors for most of them weren't so horrible. :p I personally like the TWOK uniforms, albeit not some of the lazy variations that were later used.

I liked the TOS movie-era red uniforms. I also have liked most of the TNG/DS9/VOY-era uniforms, except for the white dress jackets. Those, I thought, looked stupid.

You do realize that the white dress jackets from the later movies are the closest to real world military Mess Dress uniforms, right?

really? I liked those a lot, it was nice to have a dress uniform that looked like a dress uniform. The TNG 'dress' was pretty silly, imho, and didn't look different enough to the normal uniform.

Its funny, I used to think the TMP uniforms were terrible, but with the passage of time they hold up pretty well. Dr McCoys disco collar aside, they seem pretty functional.

Oddly, its the TWOK red uniforms that have dated somewhat - they look rather clunky and woolly now. Shame really, as they always were (and pretty much still are) my favourites.

Fashion, eh? :D

The TWOK unis work perfectly for dress uniforms, while the TMP unis work good as daily wear work and undress uniforms.
