Underworld #4 - Beckinsale in 3D?

That and the advertising for Men In Black III will probably start this month, drawing attention away. Still it's not a bad take for the first few weeks, it's already nearly £18 million in profit in less than a month.

^^^
That's $18m over it's production budget. The studio doesn't get all that money. It's split is a bit different domestic vs foreign depending on the distribution deal with theaters. The film needs to shoot for anything over, roughly, $140m worldwide but it does seem on track.
Although to hear discussion at more box office centric sites this film could probably be alright with $125m worldwide as it's P&A budget doesn't seem to have likely been as bloated as say a summer/winter tentpole film.

Underworld Awakening had a respectable 3rd weekend despite SuperBowl. It brought in an estimated $5.8m to bring it's US Domestic total up to just under $54m but it's worldwide total has now passed the $100m mark, it sits at $108m.

If it keeps pace it could be the biggest January film of 2012.
It's now the second best film in the series, Evolution still leads but in two more weeks UA should pass it.

Excellent news :)

Been spending the last half hour researching the Death Dealer coats and I could kick myself for not noticing they were all brown before now but, leather merchant in town always has tons of the stuff so, might have a go making one.

Everyone's favorite Death Dealer hung in the top 5 dailies to finish the week with a domestic total of $56.4m and a worldwide total of $110m to date.

I doubt it will happen, likely fall short by about $500-600K, but it would be nice to see the film hit $60m this weekend. It's closing in on being the highest grossing film in the series. It has to pass $62m to surpass Underworld Evolution.

It still has a while to go so it might manage it yet. But with those figures I still think a 5th film is nearly secured for January 2015 at this point.

^^^
Yeah a 5th film should happen. This weekend it landed at #10 in its 4th weekend and has $59m domestic but is now $130m worldwide with a few large markets still to open. It's going to pass $150m worldwide at any rate and that was the mark most amature analysts picked as the high bar to secure a sequel.

This upcoming President's Day weekend will be it's last big push. With any luck it can have around $63m domestic and then crawl to $70m depending on A)the amount of theaters it loses B)how long Sony keeps it in theaters.

Sony kept the last two Underworld films in theaters for only about 50+ days. Awakening is at day 24 so theoretically it's halfway through.

The Ghost Rider fan in me hopes this is a good sign. Hopefully fans of this film will crossover as well.

Sounds pretty good, it should pass the $150m mark before the 50-60 days are out. Not sure how much we can count on from the smaller foriegn markets.

Sony already has plans for this to be a second trilogy so they'll be keeping up the marketing and trying for a good return on this to fund the 5th, so far it's going pretty well for what's essentially a transitional film and the weaker story setter of the new 3.

The bluray's of the films so far are DVD upscales, Sony was last I heard, waiting for the 4th to do a full HD transfer set of all 4 films with the first getting a new edit. That's going to cost them a bit, but the fans have been waiting for it, so we'll probably see some good returns.

Between the box office takings, DVD and BR sales I'd say the 5th is nearly certain and things are looking good for 6.

But Michael was in it, albeit briefly.. I didn't notice who the actor was in the credits, and in fact, I didn't even see Michael listed... Or did I just miss it? Wiki said they pulled some footage from part 1 or 2 and then had a standin for the underwater and upside down scenes Michael is in (ala George McFly in Back to the Future 2).. LOL!!

Sounds a little more elaborate than how they did Lucian's flashback appearances in Underworld: Evolution, when we see his meetings with Tanis. They just took footage of Michael Sheen from the 1st movie and then changed the background.

I love how creative that movie was as far as using elements from the 1st movie to create new scenes for the 2nd. Supposedly, if you look really close in the establishing shot of Markus' tomb, you can see Selene lost in the crowd amongst the rest of Kraven's men, since they were just digitally inserted into a wide shot from the 1st film.

I'm wondering much more how these films keep attracting decent actors to them when they're so rubbish. How did they get Bill Nighy, Charles Dance, Derek Jacobi, and others to take roles?

That's part of what makes these movies so delicious, although I don't think Charles Dance & Stephen Rea took to it with the same relish as Nighy, Jacobi, Sheen, & Tony Curran in the previous films.

For Underworld Awakening they used a body double to play Michael and digitally placed his face onto the double. The "freezer" scene looks more like a manequin, though with Speedman even in likeness it's hard to tell.

He doesn't appear at all and given how brief his "part" was, there wasn't much call for him to to. But for the 5th I assume they'll be continuing right from where 4 left off (like 1 to 2) and have a reunion before long, bringing Speedman back to play Michael again...unfortunately.

Since David was resurrected by Selene's blood while dying from a Lycan bite, and his improved strength even near the end of 4, I assume he's sort of a suped up Vampire now and would make a much better replacement for Michael.

I just saw Underworld: Awakening in the dollar theaters (right as it made way for Star Wars - TPM). So here are my impressions.

1. Saw it in 3D. It was nice to watch Kate Beckinsale right in front of me. The movie makes full use of that latexy leather (or leathery latex) gear that she wears and there's plenty of really awesome shots of her posing. Also the 3D for the most part was very "clear". While there is a bit of the cardboard cutout nature to it, Selene can be seen really clearly. Also the CGI work on her eyes was very good. Truly liked that. As for the explosions, I did do a "mental" duck for cover a few times as the debris seemed to come at you.

2. Kate Beckinsale is getting older. This seems to contradict what I said in #1 and it kinda does. She looks great overall but in some scenes, you can see that the face is changing with age. The nose is getting bigger/slightly out of shape and it was a little apparent in some sequences. However, she is still very very hot.

3. While watching the movie, I was *in the moment* and also thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of the movie. You could sene the urgency for the most part and I liked it.

4. On thinking about it later - it does the franchise something of a disservice. It truly doesn't add anything to the mythos. (Except the part for 5-6 mins at the very beginning of the movie which covers the intervening 12 years between tat movie and current time for Selene). There's almost nothing new about Alexander Corvinus or any examination of the "origin" myth for Vampires/Lycans. There's nothing much to learn about Vampires or Lycans and how they survived. Also, the humans, after that great setup, suddenly seem to be doing nothing. It's too bad that after that initial shock of how the world has changed with the humans having discovered their existence, the rest of the film remains about Vampires and Lycans with the humans hardly playing any part. Even the police detective is a "vampire familiar" (for want of a better word). The big bad wolf (literally) strained credulity in how Sleene finally got him.

I finally broke down and rented this. I'm really not sure why I had waited so long since I'm such a fan of the series.

First of all, I felt the movie was way too short, at barely 90 minutes the movie never really slows down for a breather, it's mostly all action from start to finish. That's not to say it's not good action, it's just I would have liked some more story.

But it was nice seeing Kate Beckinsale back. After her absence in part 3 (for obvious reasons, I suppose) it was great seeing Selene take center stage again, though Micheal's absence was unforgivable. Even giving us Micheal "kind of" there and using a stand in was a poor, poor substitute.

But, as the post above me states, nothing much new is revealed, this movie seemed like filler until a possibly fifth film will reveal more of the overall story. Then while we're at it might as well put out a sixth film too...hey, I'd be game for that.

I bought it and have been waiting to hear about how it's early DVD/BR sales have gone.

I too could've gone for some more story but within the context of where this story picks up and ends I'm not sure what more there might be to reveal? I guess some dramatic point could be thought up that took place during the Purge. How lycans came to be in control of a major outlet taking part in the Purge? Overall though I don't have any dire problems with the way the story unfolded.

Would look forward to "Where's My Daddy" part 5.

My favorite thing about the Underworld series is its complex story and web of characters... this movie completely jettisoned that. It wasn't a BAD movie but it wasn't like the previous entries. It felt like a Resident Evil movie.

Yeah the 4th movie is basically to kick start the new trilogy by setting up Selene's sudden awakening in the future (well spring 2015 but still) so I doubt they wanted to do something too storyline heavy as well as having to deal with all that.

Michael's absense was explained before, his part was so minimal and Speedman was doing other work at the time that he and the studio agreed it wasn't worth him doing the full movie, just coming in for a few days to do the face scans.

The interesting thing is, since Underworld and Underworld: Evolution take place around the end of 2002, the opening of Awakening takes place in around April 2003, 12 years give or take is early 2015.

The next film will presumably be released like the others on January 20th in 2015. So they could simply use actual Budapest as a backdrop like they did in the first film, sync'ing the two back up again.

I also saw the movie a couple of weeks ago, and while it was a serviceable entry, at not even 90 mins, it lacked a storyline as in-depth as what we got in the previous movies. Still...

- It was nice seeing Selene back

- Having the coven of vampires seemingly living in the bowels of the earth the way the lycans did previously was a nice twist. I liked Charles Dance as the head vamp, though he was very Viktor-esque.

- I liked the cop who ignored the rules to help out Selene. Already I can't remember if he survived, but if so it would be nice to see him again.

- I also liked the girl who played Selene's daughter. Presumably she would return with Selene in a sequel, along with, hopefully, Michael.

- The reference to Selene's ability to walk around in the daylight was a nice touch, obviously a call-back to the "gift" that Corvinus gave her in Evolution.

India Eisley, she's just been cast in Maleficent where she is to play the younger version of Angelina Jolie. It's possible if the role gives her enough face time and raises her profile she could become the torch bearer to Kate's leather pants for more entries in the UW series.

He was on the rooftop with them right at the end watching the emergency vehicals arriving so I'd say so.

Actually what I'd love is Selene, Michael, Eve, Sebastian and David to be a 'team' for at least part of 5, but I doubt we'll be seeing some of the secondary characters again.
