Understanding the Sith

"The Emperor that you see in the last film looks the way he does because he's very old and very evil - it is what he always looked like. He just had this carapace of looking like a fairly ordinary looking guy, a politician that smiled a bit, and so on."
- Ian McDiarmid

I wondered when that quote was from. When he said that, with what informaiton he had on hand would point to where in the time line of his gig that Ian was playing Sheev. I just wanted to make sure that above what he said wasn't a quote from 1984.

:)

"George once said a really useful thing when I began playing Palpatine (in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace), and I don't know if he remembers this. He said, "In a sense, your eyes are contact lenses." In other words, the Palpatine character was the most artificial-it was as if they had grafted his face and put in (his) eyes. Because the real Palpatine is the one who bursts forth at a calculated moment inEpisode III just after persuading Anakin to kill Mace (Windu). That is when the true person comes out, letting the evil fully manifest itself. The Emperor that you see in the last film looks the way he does because he's very old and very evil-it is what he always looked like. He just had this carapace of looking like a fairly ordinary looking guy, a politician that smiled a bit, and so on."
Ian McDiarmid[

So yup, Ian is repeating some wax George said before 1999 and connecting it to the events of Episode III.

He also refers to the production of III:
"I don't think George had made up his mind when we started shooting whether to continually show Lord Sidious as he really is after his initial transformation or if Sidious would go back and forth with his appearance. I (believe) when George finally saw Dave's wonderful makeup he decided that constantly changing Palpatine's appearance would be a step backward. So the moment in the film where I make the transformation is the way I appear until the end."

There is also John Knoll saying on the DVD that Palpatine's change is due to his exertion ( as opposed to lightning damage ).

Did anyone know about Force ghosts?

"If you strike me down now, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

Obiwan can't have been the first?

Well Obi-wan did have almost two decades to learn. I'm sure as soon as Vader figured it out we internally went "Wizard!"

How did Vader become force ghost ? If all force users become force ghosts, will all those jedi murdered by Vader would be waiting for him and that includes the jedi children he slaughtered in ROTS. What about the Sith ? Is Palpatine still hanging around with Dooku haunting people.

I figure that when Vader was truly bored after killing the majority of the Jedi, he would have time to himself, in his private chamber. While Sith are probably not suppose to quiet their minds, I get the feeling that somedays Vader would need to take his helmet off and relax as much as he can. During those times? Qui-Gon could probably talk to him. While Vader would probably reject him, or Qui-Gon might be put off by what Vader did, the anger it would cause would help fuel the Dark Side. But Qui-Gon is probably one of those people that Anakin (deep inside Vader) would listen to from time to time. That is exactly who he'd need to train him. Assuming Anakin didn't figure it out himself...being the Chosen One and all that.

I think it is once you realized and repented your ways, then you become a force ghost aka one with the force. Anakin reached that stage and his past sins were forgiven.

Actually, becoming "one with the Force" involves losing your individual consciousness and becoming absorbed into the totality of "The Force." That's what happens when Jedi who have not learned how to preserve their individuality after death.

In the old EU, there were users of the dark side of "The Force" who maintained their consciousness after death. I wonder what the current stance is on that possibility.

It seems that in the new canon those who follow the dark side can't preserve their consciousness after death. Yoda encountered what appeared to be the spirit of Darth Bane on Moraband but it wasn't truly Darth Bane's conscious self, just a shadowy vestige. The whole point behind Anakin and Palpatine's study of the dark side was to preserve either their own life or the life of someone they cared about and didn't want to lose, but the only true immortality turns out to be the one discovered by Qui-Gon, which requires total rejection of the dark side.

With the exception of Qui-Gon, the unfallen Jedi killed during the PT didn't ghost, and there is presumably a reason for that.
