I never could swallow the idea that Torchwood operated out of Cardiff to save the world over and over. Sorry. It was great for Cardiff but it was too much of a suspension of disbelief.
What? Why? Why on earth does it require a suspension of disbelief for Cardiff to be home to an alien-fighting organisation? The only remaining branch of an alien-fighting organisation that had several UK sites after being set up by the Queen, as I recall. Oh, and it's right on top of a rift in time and space, from which come many of the threats of the series. Sounds like a pretty sensible place to set up shop to me.
And it's always been a nice change from every TV show on the planet being set in New York, LA or London as well.
I also enjoyed this episode but thought the CIA guy was absolutely dreadful. I hope the Americans bring more to the table than just flashier explosions, though.
Or is everyone just gonna talk in the existing one?![]()
Happy to discuss it here.
The remove the head bit was disturbing. But the guy (terrible sound quality on my tv, didn't catch any names) trying to get to Wales was hilarious.
"Whats this? I have to pay for the bridge?"
Very good 10/10 RTD, you may bring us more Dr Who.
It's strange because it's after the 9 watershed. I think it's because they've moved it to Beeb one. It was better on Beeb 3 because that channel didn't have any prudes watching.
Yes Beebs 2 and 3 would have observed the watershed as it's supposed to be observed. BBC 1 came out very badly in a recent review of BBC channel identity. Much worse than any of the others. Since they have to answer to the board and government to justify their income, perhaps the Director of BBC 1 will grow a pair and stop slavishly copying the low budget crowd pleasers from ITV and C4. That said, their commitment to drama this summer has been nothing short of excellent.
You know, I didn't notice. D'oh! Personally I think less but better quality is definitely the way to go on a decreasing budget. If BBC 1 only had the courage to dump their embarrassingly dire sitcoms and go for something original and fresh I might watch more TV. Also, poaching good shows from the other channels, like Torchwood and Miranda and then censoring them or flogging them to death, is unforgivable.
The problems with series one are more that it was rushed and they were seeing how far to go. The family friend version of series 2 wasn't actually all that edited, mostly swear words. And the reason for that was Martha being in it, not Jack. And when Torchwood was on BBC 3 what we had was inuendo, potty mouths and some sex and violence, but probably not as much as you think, and I don't recall anything that graphic either. And there was all sorts of squeamishness raised at the time about kids watching because of Captain Jack. Remember series 2 was repeated at an earlier time and in a censored format specifically so kids could watch it!
I do understand what you mean about the principle however.
