Perhaps Sulu's bi or pansexual in both universes and we just didn't see it.
I'm far more bothered by DC comics giving Sulu a relationship with his cousin Keiko (seriously, yuk) and then M'Ress (he's a furry?) than I am whether he liked guys or girls in TOS and the Kelvinverse.
