UFP SCIS Badge

FraserBNX-03

Ensign
Newbie
Modelled this years ago on Sketchup.

Recently found the model while doing a tidyup of my Hard Drive and thougtt I'd give it a render...

If memory serves, I got the idea after watching several episodes of NCIS, and got me wondering if the agency would have survived into the 23rd/24th century...

Thought I'd give it a share...

Federation logo used in this model was obtained from the sketchup warehouse, originally modelled by Ignacio B.

Does anyone know how to edit previous posts? Would have added this to my last post, but I can't see any option to edit the post...

First, let me welcome you to the TrekBBS, @FraserBNX-03! Nice to have you. :)

That badge is a nifty idea! Can you also render it from a perspective where the text is more readable? Especially those last two lines are really hard to see.

Don't worry, the Edit function will be there eventually for you. It's one of the features that only appear for posters after 14 days and a certain number of posts. It's kind of a safety measure. Thanks for crediting the creator of the logo!

I actually agree, the text is very hard to see. One of those things I never thought about when creating it years ago when I didn't have a renderer extension. The gold material is probably a bit too reflective.

Changed the material of the Starfleet Chevron, Fed Logo and text to silver. And rendered from a new angle...

It looks good. I could see uniformed Fed law enforcement wearing this as well. I have been meaning to get around to LEO uniforms in Trek. Something like this would go well I think. Good job.

I would expect Starfleet to have an agency of this sort attached to it. Maybe not under that specific name, but they'd still need the likes of it.

Design looks okay.

Wouldn't Starfleet Security qualify as such an agency?

In my mind, the role of Starfleet Security is comparable to the US Marines or Royal Marines, etc. Starfleet Tactical, is sub-division of Starfleet Security.

Starfleet Criminal Investigative Service (SCIS) is the law enforcement agency of Starfleet. It's function is to investigate criminal activities involving all divisions of Starfleet, though its broad mandate includes UFP Security, counterintelligence, counter-terrorism, cyber warfare, and the protection of members of Starfleet and their families Federation-wide. SCIS personnel are considered civilians, with half being made up of Special Agents.

Special Agents, are plain-clothed armed law-enforcement investigators who frequently have to co-ordinate with other agencies such as Federation Security (FBI in real-life). At least a quarter of Special Agents, are Starfleet (Inactive).

IMO, more like a combination of Master-at-Arms/Regulators, Royal Marines Commandos and US Navy VBSS/SEALs, although they may have some of the ceremonial security functions of the modern US Marines (Embassy protection, VIP protection in hostile environments et al). What they aren't is the dedicated combined arms warfare fighters that the USMC have become. Starfleet doesn't appear to have those at all (it's the one definition of "not a military" that actually fits the evidence!), if Starfleet has need of those, then they probably call up "Planetary Guard" units from worlds like Andor, Bajor (most admission), Cait, and maybe Earth (such units were planned for HF/PL but cut because "viewers are idiots") that still maintain them for domestic use.

HF/PL? Do you mean Homefront and Paradise Lost? from DS9?

And, yes, that is essentially what I meant as the role Starfleet Security serves...

I always love this idea. Excellent work on the badge.

<<In "Homefront" the President said he never sought this position. Does this mean the Federation president is appointed? Why no election? And why does the Federation President put Earth into a State of Emergency? Does Earth not have it's own Government like all the other members of the Federation?>>

We assume the Fed President was duly elected, but that he reluctantly was induced to run for the position. As for the Earth Govt vs. Fed Govt issue, this was something we wrestled with in the story break. We wanted to tell the story of an attempted military coup of the Federation and that meant dealing with the Fed president. However, that meant the troops "in the
streets" had to be on Earth and that Earth itself had to be under martial law since the Fed is headquartered on Earth. We discussed having the Prez "federalize" the Earth defense forces or supercede the authority of an indigenous Earth Govt, but the story kept getting too complicated and we didn't want to start mentioning all these other players and organizations that we weren't going to see. So in the end, we skirted the issue of who actually governs Earth. Personally, I think there is an Earth Govt that operates like more powerful versions of States do in the US system, but this is all VERY murky water.>>

Seems like a question for a series more editorially willing to go "into the weeds" to finally resolve on-camera.
