U.S.S. TITAN -- THE WINNER!

Marco Palmieri

Rear Admiral

It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of the Starship Titan Design Contest: Sean Tourangeau of Colorado Springs, CO. Congratulations to Sean!

You can meet the new lady in town here:

http://www.startrekbooks.com/titancontest

In the coming days we'll be adding additional material to the page, including callouts for the ship's features, comments from some of the judges, and notes from the designer on his approach.

Enjoy!

Nice! I'm glad they picked one that was similar to the Starfleet style. I can only imagine some of the wild and crazy ship designs that were submitted.

Very nice!

You can see where Sean's influences came from.

Well Done Sean!

Now get cracking on the cutaway so we know where everything goes.

Any chance of a gallery of some/all of the other entries?

As for the Titan..I like it.

Congrats Sean!

Not quite what I've been picturin' while readin' The Red King, but that is a nice design.

Nice looking ship, yes. But derivitive is also the first word that came to my mind upon looking at it. At least it goes a bit further than just slapping together various parts from various existing ships.

Are the runnerups or other entries available for viewing?

Nifty (if a tad derivitive).
Yeah, boy, perish forbid that a Starfleet ship look like, y'know, a Starfleet ship.

Sorry, but there's nothing to indicate that Starfleet shipbuilders go all that far outside the lines, as it were. Titan was going to have a similiar feel to the other ships.

Well, consistency with established Starfleet style did represent 25% of the score...as did originality. The challenge to any designer entering the contest was how to balance the two criteria. :)

As noted at the top of the page displaying the designs, we hope to show the top runners up on startrekbooks.com sometime next week.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. But I couldn't help but feel like I was seeing another 'Akira' type or variant ship. Maybe it's just me but I was thinking of the Titan as having something 'more' or 'different' then some of the stock starfleet ships we've seen. Well maybe it's because we've seen more starfleet ships in the last few years that it's harder to make one look really unique. Also, the name "Titan" made me think of a big ship, not a little larger then Voyager and a little smaller then E-D

I realize that but I thought it would have been a good venue for a new look (while still incorporating Starfleet characteristics).

It would be interesting to have the winner here to discuss his inspirations and motivations behind the design. I am in awe of the creativity I see in this design, as well as the numerous examples of work over in Trek Art. I also eagerly await "the rest of the story" for the Titan.

That's pretty neat! Not quite what I was imagining, either, but it works and is quite cool. It looks like an evolution of a number of existing design concepts, but taken to the next stage, and in taht sense it fits into the overall milieux quite nicely.

Very cool. I'll look forward to those things. :)

Any chance of a slightly larger set of images, or are you reserving that for the book? ;)

I actually think that's exactly what this design delivers. But that's just MHO.

Best,
Alex

Sean may well decide to do that, but as I noted at the top of the thread, I hope to include in the coming days notes and comments from him on the page displaying the design.
