U.S.S. Pandemic - Research and Disaster Relief Class

Dryson

Commodore
Commodore
I decided to make a kit bash pandemic relief starship.

When a pandemic is abound, it doesn't hurt to have Misery and Isolation by your side.

The ship is a kit bash using the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A, U.S.S. Olympic, NCC-58925 and U.S.S. Avenger, NCC-1860.

The Pandemic is a biological and chemical research and disaster relief ship. Her primary mission is too investigate any and all first contacts with viruses that are discovered in space or on a planets surface.
Her crew is complimented with 380 Starfleet personnel plus an additional 300 Emergency Medical Holograms based on the Doctors programming for a total of 680 crew members.
All crew members not assigned to the research staff must have secondary training in bacterial and viral disciplines in order to be considered for assignment to the Pandemic class. The EMH programs are all dedicated to bacterial and viral disciplines as well as disaster relief.
The Upper and Lower Research and Containment Spheres are
based on the Olympic class and allow for an additional 22 decks of research and containment facilities without the need to add a larger Engineering Hull. The first five decks of the upper sphere contain nine dedicated research stations/bays each. Ten of the research stations / bay are isolated from the rest of the ship and can only be accessed via the isolated transporter. system. The next twelve decks are dedicated to the isolation and containment of infected people. A standard containment deck is a pass through deck, meaning that there are not any bulkhead separators that establish individual quarters. Instead force field barriers are used to create isolation sections with double and even triple force fields being used to create containment sections. Each isolation and containment deck is able to handle up to 200 containment units and 400 isolation units. During times of need, crew quarters can be converted into isolation sections through the use of force field barriers.
During times of research and disaster relief a triple force field barrier encompasses all twelve decks when all decks are being used. When a deck is not being used the force field energy is redirected to other needs. The force field barriers for each research station/bay remain active as long as research is being conducted. Dedicated access routes from the hangar bays to the isolation and containment decks are also heavily shielded during times of use and are restricted to authorized personnel only.
The ship also has 10 sealed bays that can accommodate 50 IC units each and are accessible via the isolation transporter only.
The remaining five decks of the lower sphere each contain five modular research stations/bays that be set up to support the dedicated stations or can function as an independent station/bay.
The ship has 2,500 Individual Containment Units that are stored in between decks when not in use. The ICU's are Biobed's equipped with the most up to date disease fighting capabilities in Starfleet. Each Biobed has its own force field and force field generator that are separate from the main power grid. Power for the beds are produced from solar cells on the ships outer surface as well as from several deployable and tethered solar power collector arrays.
The ship also has 3,000 Individual Isolation Suits that are able to provide moderate medical services to an infected person. Each suit has its own level two force field barrier to keep a virus from escaping an asymptomatic individual while a cure is being developed.
The Engineering Hull contains an additional five decks of isolation and containment facilities and can handle an additional 200 isolation units or 100 containment units.
All crew quarters, mess rooms, engine bays, etc. maintain a level one force field during times of research station/bay use and disaster relief to mitigate the chance that a virus would escape containment and infect them.

During disaster times of the relief, the ship has standard rations for six months for 10,000 people at 3 meals a day. If fresh water is problem during disaster relief missions, a liquid bulk freighter will be dispatched with the disaster relief mission.

Shuttles for Pandemic class are Type 7 shuttles that have been converted to allow transport of contagious and asymptomatic individuals as well as overflows.
Four Work Bees provide cargo handling duties with two Sphinx Workpods on hand if orbital containment facilities are required to be constructed. If an orbital containment facility is necessary, construction supplies will be routed to the ships location.

Although the Pandemic class starships are primarily research and disaster relief ships, the prospect of a Threat Force capturing research being conducted on the ship necessitates that it have its own phaser weaponry. Operating doctrine also maintains that a combat cruiser or two combat frigates will escort a Pandemic class starship at any time to deter and defend against Threat Force incursions.

Might I suggest some different names? Perhaps USS Kerwin after the astronaut-doctor who was part of the crew of Skylab. Or USS Jonas Salk? Albert Schweitzer? Or at least more positive names like Comfort, Mercy, Hope, Relief. etc.

Ship names proposed:
Anthony Fauci
Theresa Tam
Christopher Whitty
Dafydd Williams
Roberta Bondar

Others to be recommended...

How about the U.S.S. Li Wenliang?

EDIT TO ADD:
About that lower containment sphere (your mom works here?) Is there one on either side of the secondary hull, is the hull asymmetrical, or do you intend that the lower sphere intersects the secondary hull with more complicated intersection-lines?

Definitely the latter... *Yeesh*

‘Don’t worry, citizen, the top-notch crew of the USS Bubonic Plague over there will fix ya right up!!

Uhhh - that’s okay. Think I’ll try that Andorian holistic treatment instead, please!’

Yeah, I like the novel ship design, but the class name and some of the others are cringe-worthy! USS Misery? Nobody's going to want any part of that business! :rommie:

Actually the Engineering Hull does pass through the center of the Lower Containment Sphere thus making the sphere into two halves. There are only two access points from the Engineering Hull into the Lower Containment Sphere. During times of containment, that access points are sealed off from the rest of the ship to prevent accidental infection.

I even thought about making the Lower Containment Sphere detachable and able to land a on a planet with tug class ships able to then resupply the ship with new Containment Spheres for additional isolation and treatment. Basically the Lower Containment Spheres would become a Ground Zero Field Medical Treatment Facility for pandemics and galdemics (galaxy wide pandemic). Six Lower Containment Spheres would align themselves to each other in a circular pattern with a tug transporting the central cylinder section that would serve an additional ICU facility, crew quarters and a command deck.

Trek MD - Interesting idea for a starship. Any additional views of her?

I planned on doing some other views of her but since I have gotten such a good response I plan on updating the design to be more modern looking.

Mysterion, Colonel Midnight and Gibraltar- Might I suggest some different names? Perhaps USS Kerwin after the astronaut-doctor who was part of the crew of Skylab. Or USS Jonas Salk? Albert Schweitzer? Or at least more positive names like Comfort, Mercy, Hope, Relief. etc.

Colonel Midnight and Gibraltar - I thought about changing the names but decided not too. The reason behind the names is psychological barrier that puts the patient at ease. Knowing that they are infected with virus or disease and being taken aboard the U.S.S. Misery for treatment as an example creates a shell around their thoughts of suffering, but inside of the suffering the medical staff is right there with them helping them to get better. The name sakes are meant to comfort the victim by making them feel as if they are on the outside looking inside of the processes being applied to treat what is going on inside of them.

Definitely the latter... *Yeesh*

Comments like the ones above is why there is a Class VI "Launch Your *&^ Out The Back Of The Ship" Torpedo Tube Launcher. Green Blooded in-human....

I would like to add some more names, but to do so means that by adding more ships to this class, there has to be a need for ships procurement costs. I think the best reason to produce more ships of this class is due to the Synths on Ghulion IV using their Orchids in space. No one knows what type of new viruses or bacteria goes along with with such a species. Do the Orchids pollinate in space? What type of space based allergies might occur? Will the Tal-Shiar bring back a new disease to Romulus after their interaction with Orchids? Do they migrate through space to other planets, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and his typical, Captain Ahab Sensibility and the unleashing of the Synth Orchids not to mention the Synths allowing the Destroyer to enter Federation space from who knows where, who knows what might have come through that portal in the small amount of time it was open?

How many will it be this time Admiral Picard? How many will be drowned in the sea hunting your White Whale?

Looks/Reads like I hit a raw nerve or perhaps... got under someone’s skin.

*rim shot*

(Sorry, too easy - had to go there. My apologies...)

Cheers,

I went back and reworked the original design and incorporated five different starships into the final design.

Pandemic will remain the lead ship name, but I am open for names of 19 more ships. I would like some, English Vulcan, Tellerite, Andorian, Klingon, XB, Bajorian, Vissian, etc. names for ships that relate to medical research, comfort and disaster relief, and epidemic research. The name can relate to people, events, plants or medical procedures. It'd be nice to have a name or two from the logs of the Voyager as well.

When using non-Earth based names provide an definition for the name please.

I don't have a ship's name to share but I have something to dedicate the class: Medicus ad sidera pervenerunt (Healer, reach to the stars). That's in Latin.
