Ah yes, ''Articles'' didn't actually say the "growths in their spines" meant backbones, did it? That's what we all assumed (well, okay, what I assumed) but I guess that's it exactly- assumption. I don't remember any confirmation of what those spines were. It could refer to thick porcupine quills or Kentrasaurus spikes or some other feature.

No, I've got it. The Tzenkethi are clearly a race of intelligent Trek lit books, who have achieved sapience and constructed a civilization. The "spines" refer to the spine of a book. The Autarch is probably some tattered old copy of "Spock Must Die!"

David R. George III seems to be describing 'spines' as something similar to spikes which can be positioned anywhere on a tzencethi.
Maybe they have Wolverine-like claws.
The race would be a lot more interestinng if it is either non-humanoid or barely humanoid.

In the latest Star Trek magazine there in article about the Typhon Pact. When listing the civilizations that comprise it, it mentions their dominant traits. So we know their violence is known throughout the quadrant. I guess that is something.

When I read "Tzenkethi" my brain always pictures the Kzinti from TAS. I'm a real visual thinker, so sometimes I come up short without "canonical" material to draw on. (Seems like canonical should mean the pope approves.)
Maybe they will be ursine in nature. You don't see to much of that in Trek.
