TWOK dress uniforms

I think the "monster maroons" were, in fact, intended to be the dress uniforms, it was the addition of vests, field jackets, skirts etc. that made the basic design more versatile and functional in different cicumstances?

That's an interesting idea, and I think it's plausible even though we never saw the shirts worn without the dress jacket. My only wish for the TWOK scheme would have been to keep the original color scheme for the shirts, rather than the new one that was invented.

Yea it was like they had a different colour for every single department. Although that does tell you more about the officer.

In the DC Comics adaptation of The Ashes of Eden, dress-uniform versions of the TWOK-era uniforms are shown. They're not too different-looking from the regular uniforms we saw on screen, as I recall - I think the collars are different, and there's more braid adorning the black edging on the uniform jacket, but I don't remember too much else. If I can find a scan I'll post a link to it.

Wasn't ST:III's "big-ass admiral" (i.e. the black dude who said he was "Commander, Starfleet") wearing one of those "dress uniforms" in TSFS? Listening to the commentary Nimoy says he had to use the uniforms he had to work with...though frankly, Kirk's "seashell-swirl" tunic and his away-mission leather jacket remain some of the coolest of the bunch, IMO.

Admiral Morrow's jacket had a fancy new collar and cut and was made of a velvet-like material, but I'm not sure I'd consider it a dress uniform. Not when Morrow wears it in a lounge where other officers and men dress in everything from civvies to duty coverall. It looks like a comfy version of the usual jacket, something for use on informal rather than formal occasions...

Wasn't the "seashell swirl" a civilian outfit? It was confusing since it was pretty much the same color as the uniforms.

I always assumed it was Starfleet issue - the Jacket, at least. But you're right, it doesn't carry the usual Starfleet insignia, it just happens to be the same colour.

I believe it very well was either a civilian OR a lax-duty/shore-leave type outfit (and that's the exact one I was referring to ... a very good look for mid-'80s Shatner, IMO).

I agree. Of all the civilian outfits we've seen in ST history that one was probably the best. It looked good both as a garment, and also on Shatner.
