Two writing questions about secondary romance

How do you write a secondary romance without taking away the power of the main romance? Should you wrap up the secondary romance before wrapping up the main romance or should you wrap up both romances at the same time?

I'll go on the supposition that you are talking about two couples in romantic relationships in the story and one is the "star" couple and the other is a "supporting cast" couple. In that case, you obviously resolve the "star" couple's relationship last, since it's their story.

I'd tend to agree, especially if the main couple's romance is a big part of the story - resolving them first will give the audience the 'money shot', if you'll pardon the expression in the context but then expect them to carry on caring about the supporting couple for x more chapters.

Don't make the secondary romance too challenging or involved. Keep their romanitic issues to a minimum and not too challenging, and make sure it's something that, when interspursed throught the film, takes up no more than say ... 20 minutes, with a preference in 15.

Think about what the scoring would be under it; Is it deeply intimate? Lush and romantic? Than you've gone overboard.

The second romance will often comment on the primary one in some way. Have them experience a similar problem to reinforce the difficulties in the primary relationship or have them getting on to constrast with the argument your stars are having.

Oh, and also: consider: is it good or fresh enough to where people want to pay $9.00 or more bucks to see it? (assuming you're writing a script)
