A remake of the 1996 game.
They're remaking it again.

I'm guessing this is going to be a bog standard "we're to lazy to make something new so we redid this old game the modern gaming audience thinks is old and icky to look at with new fancy dancy graphics and microtransactions to harpoon whales" cash grab.

At least Tomb Raider: Anniversary (the 2007 remake of the first game) had a narrative reason for it being made. It was part of the running story line at that time with it and Tomb Raider: Legend being setups for Tomb Raider: Underworld.

No way we're getting back to back games because game development is so bad these days. I expect Tomb Raider: Catalyst to be delayed past 2027 and also awful name!

I don't think it will be delayed because they've been working on two games for years already.

A nice shiny remake to better cement the new unified timeline is a pretty good idea in my book and there's a brand new one straight after so not like it's all people are getting. The dinosaurs in the trailer looked so good. Of course with nice graphics comes the stronger possibility of it setting off my thalassaphobia.

I can just about handle the underwater sections in Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Planet of the Tomb Raider but not in Shadow.

I'm sick of these.. Why not continue with current Lara? Oh yeah money. It's lazy and greedy.

Haha I like what you almost called Rise Nacelle

I wonder if they're testing the waters here - looks like the remake is being done by some other studio, and Catalyst is being done by Crystal. Might be the final roll of the dice for Crystal's weird "parental trauma cover shooter" vision of the series; if the remake proves more popular then it's curtains for them.

Then again the TR1 remake will probably also be mandated to tie into Crystal's batshit storyline anyway as a desperate attempt to pursue the impossible "unified Lara" project; I don't imagine it'll really recapture recapture the tone of TR1 nor will they let Lara Croft act like her original self again.

I think they both look good, although part of me feels sad they didn't simply continue with the previous Lara even though they technically finished the trilogy. Would have been nice to see the current Lara evolve into the experienced Lara, where we could have still seen a remake of the first game and a mix of both new and old design philosophies.

Unintentionally, they've divided the fandom into camps that either prefer the older styled games and those who prefer the Uncharted-styled games. There's no reason why there can't bit a mix of both in the design of the levels, but I was never really able to get into the early games.

I think diehard fans have always been divided between the original Lara Croft games and the reboot Lara Croft. That's always been the way I suspect. I just enjoy the games for what they are as there is no real point in getting that hung up about a character.

I'm excited to be getting more Tomb Raider, even though one is a remake. I enjoyed the older games and the reboot trilogy, so I'm curious to see how they mix the two on the remake. The setting on the new one looks interesting too. I don't really expect anything groundbreaking after playing all the modern Uncharted and Tomb Raider games, but if there's a decent story and similar gameplay I'll feel like I've gotten my money's worth! I do hope they continue to expand on the stealth options too, I enjoyed using them whenever possible.

the big question is, will these new games have, you know, tomb raiding? or will they be shooters with Lara Croft as the lead? The series has seemed to morph into this...
I think it was the last game where tombs were essentially optional side quests...(????)

I hope they get back to more exploration and less "run and gun"...

the beauty of the original first game on PS was the feeling of immersion in the environments and the sense of accomplishment from finishing a level and finding that elusive artifact, coupled with a beautiful and sometimes haunting soundtrack...it's still a unique experience and still relevant today 30 years later.

while the run and gun action is fun, there are so many other games that use this..

I think a good comparison would be Splinter Cell: Conviction wherein they leaned away from Sam Fisher's "stealth from the shadows" gameplay and turned him into Jason Bourne....the dissatisfaction that garnered led them to reintroduce stealth in the follow up "Splinter Cell: Blacklist" (and hopefully soon the remake will be available)

So I hope that they include the exploration aspect in the franchise as it really is enjoyable!

Oh, I know and there are some who prefer the original games, which is why the recently remastered versions of the games were well-received by those fans. I'm not obtuse, but some of the puzzles in those early Tomb Raider games I find frustrating because they can have you going in circles and I don't particularly enjoy them as they can tend to be overly complex.

It will be interesting to see if they end up keeping the complexity in the remake or if it will share more modern game design ideas.

they could do what Uncharted does, have a "hint" option, and finally a "solve puzzle" option

Well, the 'solve puzzle' option is going a bit too far imho. but a hint system is a good idea. It could be turned off for those die-hard players. Thinking on it some more, it wasn't so much the puzzles themselves, but rather the limitations of the game engine that made the puzzles more difficult than they needed to be, not to mention the tank style controls.

Yeah that's how Uncharted did it, i think it was based on time..if you took too long to solve a puzzle it would give you hints...and if you kept screwing up the puzzle solution it would ask you if you wanted to solve the puzzle.
