Two City'ers: Where Is Your Allegiance?

The Boy Who Cried Worf

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I grew up in Northern California so that always gave me two choices: San Francisco or Oakland. While I like the A's and have been intrigued at following a lot of their moves over the years I was always a Giants fan. I rooted for the 49ers and actively loathed the Raiders. Maybe I just got caught up in that idea that San Francisco was urbane an sophisticated compared to it rougher sister to the East. I am a big Golden State Warriors fan though and even though the Kings came along later I sill would never root for them. My LA girlfriend loves the Dodgers and hates the Angels.

If you live in an area or a city with two or more teams in the same sport what are your attitudes toward them? Root for both or absolutely hate one? How did you make your choice?

This pretty much limits the responses to people in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. At least in the U.S.

I'll take your title of 'Two City'ers' and expand that to fit my needs (because I'm just a bastard that way).
I've lived almost my entire life in Colorado, so I am partial to Denver sports, i.e. the Rockies, Broncos, Avalanche, and Nuggets. However, I lived for two years in Minneapolis, and my mom's side of the family is from there so I consider that my secondary city.

Rarely teams from both cities play each other, but when they do I default to the Denver team. For instance, in interleague play next week the Rockies are playing the Twins in Minneapolis. I'll root for the Rockies, but since the Twins are having an awesome year, It won't break my heart if the Twins win 2 out of the three.

I grew up in NY. I love the Mets, have a soft spot for the Yanks because I went to college near there and caught a lot of games. In football I like the Pats. We got a CT station where I grew up that showed their games. It was a nice alternative to Jets-Bengals at 1 followed by Giants-Cardinals at 4 when they both sucked. In basketball, I used to be a huge Knick fan in the 90s, but after management ran that team into the ground 10 years ago or so, I started following Orlando.

I grew up in Los Angeles.

I love the Angels, I'm indifferent to the Dodgers (my mom was a die-hard Dodgers fan, though).

I love the Lakers, I'm indifferent to the Clippers (who came to LA later in my life).

As for football, I've always followed the Rams, and stayed with them after their move. I hate the Raiders, no matter where they were.

Sorta the opposite here. My Mom hates the Dodgers to this day for leaving Brooklyn (where she was born) and would only root for them if they were playing a team of death row inmates.

I've always had a soft spot for the Broncos. My dad went to the Denver area a lot when I was a kid for work. I had all sorts of Broncos gear. His best friend's brother was a ticket dealer out there, so he always got prime seats for the Rockies, Nuggets, Broncos, etc...

I even admit to buying a pair of the infamous vertically striped socks last year.

It's funny, those vertically striped socks were always the punchline to the joke about how bad those early uniforms were, but they sold like crazy when all that throwback gear came out.
I didn't buy the socks, but I have a mustard yellow sweatshirt with the old logo.

I pretty much wore them every Sunday during the football season. I totally did the Jabar Gaffney barber pole look with one, and kinda of a checkerboard pattern with the other by alternating the twists. I gotta post a pic at some point.

I grew up all over the place (dad was in the Air Force), but come from a New England family, so I became a fan of most of the Boston sports teams. I also spent a good chunk of my formative years in Alaska, and up there the closest thing we had to a home team were the Seattle Mariners, so I kind of consider them a "second favorite" team.

It must be an American thing, as here in Australia, the two major football codes (rugby league and Australian Football), both competitions started in Sydney and Melbourne. For me, when i first started following rugby league there was no team in the Wollongong region, until the Steelers started in 1982. But the year before I started going for the Eels. They happened to be the team that won in 1981. It's about the blue & gold for me.

Only lived in the Parramatta region of Sydney for a few years, when I was there during the late 1990's. It was fun living there, but happy with where I am. It's fun wearing an Eels jersey through Newcastle (but the Eels are popular here after the Knights)

Yeah, if the Dodgers were still here I would probably be a fan of them instead of the Yankees

Anyways, I'm a pretty big Yankees fan though I do like the Mets as well. They're never really a threat so there is no need to hate on them :p

As a Chicagoan I have chosen the team that has won a championship within the collective memory of mankind. The Chicago White Sox.

One day a little boy walks into his kindergarten class wearing a Cubs hat. The teacher notices the little boy wearing the hat and asks him why he is a Cubs fan. The little boy responds, "Because my mommy and daddy are Cubs fans." The teacher responds, "Well that is not a good way to live your life. Now what if your dad was a drug dealer and your mom was a hooker?" The boy replied, "Then I'd be a White Sox fan."

 kidding...

I'm on the San Francisco Side when it comes to sports in the Bay Area. Love the Giants and 49ers, like the A's (Would root for the Giants if the two played each other) and the Raiders are tolerable with a bad owner. As for college, it depends I guess. Really just a casual fan who wants to see these young men do well.

Nah, there's also Pennsylvania, Ohio and MD/DC, all of which have two major sports markets to choose from if you don't happen to live smack-dab in one of the specific cities. Someone who lives in, say, Columbia MD, between DC and Baltimore, might root for the O's and the 'Skins. If they're a masochist. :p

Were you around for the 89 World Series(and of course all the drama that went with it)?

Yes I was. Biggest Earthquake I've ever experienced in my life.

Grew up in NYC, and I was always a Mets fan over the Yankees. I didn't care much about football until I moved to Colorado, so the Broncos are my number one team.
