I remember looking forward to this even though I was only 12 years old. I had memories of watching the original series and Sylvester McCoy was my Doctor, so was so excited and pleased when I saw him at the start of the movie. Not sure if I fully understood the concept of regeneration at the time so did not fully understand why he turned into Paul McGann after being shot.

The other memory I have was that I had to record it on VHS as I could not watch it live and think I msjudged the length of tape and only recorded first forty mins or so. I had no idea how it ended until I got the DVD about ten years ago!

Also ten years ago today we had The Idiot's Lantern.

The years ending with 6 have been the ones in which we've had new Doctor Who in every decade since it began. In 1966 we had Hartnell hand-off to Troughton, 1976 was in the midst of the Tom Baker era, 1986 was Trial of a Time Lord, 1996 the TV movie, and 2006 Tennant's first year and Torchwood's premiere. Though there will be a new episode this year, and a new spin-off it's kind of ironic that 2016 is the year with the least amount of Who since the show returned.

I watched classic Who staring in '79 or '80 until it ended. Then, I was so thrilled when, finally, the DW movie was announced. Then, there were discussions that it could serve as a backdoor pilot for a new series! Exciting times, right? I thought we'd be watching DW regularly again. Well, we all know how that turned out.

Fortunately, we eventually did get a great replacement series! It just took a bit longer than expected!

^^It was something I picked up on a while back. In fact, it had me worried back when the rumours were circulating that there would be no new DW this year. I kept thinking "of all the years to take off, you can't do it on one that ends in a six. That's a five decade tradition down the drain." Though I guess the irony of the situation is acceptable, in 1996 we took a break from the Wilderness era with the TV movie, and in 2016 we take a break from the show with a true gap year.

I'm still thoroughly enjoying DWM's TV Movie issue, reading all the behind the scenes stuff and interviews, rare photos and whatnot. It's great that Paul is still up for more 8th Doctor and that Daphne Ashbrook would love -- in fact, "would kill" -- to play Grace again. Who knows if it'll ever happen, but it's fun to hope!
