Exactalioso. And considering that I work in a club as a singer (thank GOD I don't have to sing Justin Bieber, One Direction, or any of that pissy-pants boy band crap...LOL), it is even moreso. Granted, most people that come into any of the music clubs in New Orleans generally expect to hear the same six songs over and over (Sweet Home Alabama, Sweet Caroline, Sweet Child O' Mine, Summer of '69, Jesse's Girl, and Don't Stop Believin'...LOL). It's like, when folks cross into the threshold of the French Quarter, their musical IQ goes abysmal.

My friend, I have met at least one such person online(hardcore, bred to the bone, dyed in the wool TOS fan/completely anti-JJ Abrams) who indeed judged me a dumbass. And there was no reasoning whatsoever with this guy. We had pretty good discussions at first til this guy started showing his true colors. So, yeah, I tend to get a bit defensive because I know there are plenty more of his ilk out there.

You and I (and many others here) are cool. We have differing opinions, and recognize them as such.

I will say this: If it weren't for fandoms, I would not meet cool folk such as yourself and others on this board, or other boards. I don't despise the folk...I don't despise fans....it's the general fandoms I've turned my back on. (Kinda like an Atheist who doesn't mind people of faith, it's largely the organized religion he/she hates.) (sidenote: I'm not an Atheist, just an Afan. )

I'd like to say I make my own fun blah de blah but..

I did pretty much abandon the SW fandom because the prequel haters killed it for me. So fucking venomous at every mention of the prequels which at the time were, you know, HALF the franchise. I'm kinda getting back into it though, with all the new stuff coming up.

And I've abandoned the ST:XI forum here for the most part though at one time it was my main forum for posting. Because, haters. Just freaking have a hate thread and a love thread and let me hang out in the love thread and not have to read WHY my love is wrong every other post. Might be an exaggeration, haven't been here in a while

Goodbye, I'm going back to VOY now where we have the lizard babies to remind us about the F word (fun, not frakk).

Isn't it insane? I watched a parody one time about hardcore, non-special edition fans of the original trilogy, and one guy sits there with a baby (dressed like Yoda) in his arms, and he says: "Ummm...we do not watch the special editions in this house." as if it were against his religion to do so. Granted, I know it was a parody, but the sad part is, there are actually people out there that are like that.

I enjoyed the prequel trilogy. In fact, Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars movie to date...just barely (like, razor's edge barely) nudging out The Empire Strikes Back. I don't get the hatred for the prequel trilogy either. I used to be a Star Wars fan, but turned my back on it for the very reasons you cited. That's another part of why I've turned my back on fandom in general.

To be blunt: I am a lover of most sci-fi, but a fan of none of it.

Bottom line when it comes to Star Wars: It is/was George Lucas' baby, and if he wanted to alter the original trilogy to make his "definitive" vision, more power to him.

It's pretty mild and friendly here now, compared to the wild & woolly days of 2008, 2009, and the first half of 2010. Also a lot quieter, though part of that's down to the retirement of some of the uncontrollably angry people.

Oh, no - the Vengeance hadn't been built yet. More like an accumulation of bad karma, in that it has a way of catching up with one eventually.

Going to a fan forum to complain about fandom is like going to a nightclub to complain about dancing.

Usually I'm complaining about those idiots just standing on the dancefloor with their drinks in their hands, staring at the girls, never making a move. They are blocking everyone who want to dance.

It's funny reading people say that Uhura didn't respect Kirk.
I, for one, thought that she was more a friend to him than Spock! I find their relationship ten times more believable and 'visible'.
I also thought that it was the whole point of their dynamic in the first movie that he gained her respect (symbolized by the different tone she used to call him 'captain' too) even if it means he still didn't get the girl.
She's the one who asked him how he felt after Pike died. She comforted him when Bones was in danger, she was generally protective to him in the kronos battle (speaking about S/U arguing one time but then being able to be all business after that: the scene with the klingons is pretty much proof of that and that they can work together probably better than other combinations of characters that aren't romantically involved with each other) as he was to her. She did cry when he died and a lot of people seem to forget that in the end she didn't just save Spock, she saved Kirk too.

I don't see Uhura lacking respect for him more than Scotty, Spock and Carol anyway.
I may also remind to some people here that Carol, for example, brought up Kirk's personal life - see the whole rumor about Chapel - while on duty to tease him and suggest he had a bad reputation (AND she did that right after he had just busted her for lying about her identity to get aboard the enterprise). Not to mention telling him to just turn around without telling him what she was doing behind him (in that, I can see why some people think she wanted him to see her lol )
So apparently a girl that just met him 5 minutes ago can refer to him the way she wants and as if they were long time friends and forget he's her commanding officer BUT Uhura who had known Kirk for longer and who is in some way one of his friends, suddenly doesn't respect him as a captain just because she started arguing with her boyfriend and said 'two minutes captain please'
And don't even let me start about Scotty or Bones or.. everyone saved for Sulu and Chekov basically.
Here we go with the double standards when it comes to Uhura... how is that everything this girl says and does seems to always be scrutinized and called bad and yet all the other characters get a free pass after another for every damn thing they do, even when they're way worse? So suddenly she doesn't respect Kirk... and yet using this logic then all the other characters had been was more unrespectful of him as a captain than her.
Like for the S/U relationship and the 'not professional' argument, funny how it works in this fandom and how people are very selective when it comes to applying their own standards and rules about how the characters should behave.


I also think that the Spock/Uhura thing being something that already existed pre-enterprise - like the friendship between Kirk and McCoy and possibly Spock/Pike, Pike/Kirk and Sulu/Chekov - is what makes it so great to me. It's part of these characters but it's not the be all and end all of the whole story the way other romances are. The mystery is also part of the appeal especially knowing Spock as a character. This kind of narrative has a name that now I'm missing. Nevertheless, I prefer it over watching them get together IN the movies and for a number of reasons that I bet are the same of the writers.

It's been 15 years since TPM, and the hate machine is still going non-stop. Why are people still so enraged? Because a set of films didn't meet their expectations? They need to get over it.

Part of the problem, I think, is consensus culture. Hating the prequels is considered the mainstream thing to do, in that it's what the "cool" people are doing. And a lot of people so desperately want to fit in.

About Uhura respecting Kirk, ST'09 showed us him earning her respect, from her refusing to call him captain in the Kobayshi Maru test to the scorn-dripping "I sure hope you know what you're doing... captain" after Kirk goaded Spock into resigning and finally her enthusiastic "Dock control reports ready, captain!" at the very end. By the end of the movie, she believed in him.

Even after the biggest part of the excitement had died down, stuff like that would still crop up now and then. There were some pretty good discussions in those threads, too, in spite of the one guy's obstinate unwillingness to get what anyone else was saying.

I know everyone complains to the hilt about her space undies scene, but I think it's one of those situations where she wanted him to peek.

Don't give the writers more credit than they deserve. They're not nearly that sophisticated. They admitted they threw it in for fan-service and they kind of regret it now (just as JJ has even regretted using so much lens-flare, after even his wife started bashing him for it). It was gratuitous by design.

You see more than this at the beach.

If it were Baywatch, The Movie, it would make sense. But to throw it in how they did, when they did, was gratuitous and unnecessary.

Agree... maybe have Kirk catch her reflection off a pane of glass or instrument panel. Give the audience a more subtle peek, but really focus on Kirk's expression as he realizes that his feelings for her are MORE than just sexual.
