TVH: Kirk's Time Travel Hallucination

Mr Silver

Commodore

Simply put:

What Was It All About?

(Note: It would appear its left open to interpretation, however I'm interested in getting a discussion going here)

I remember something from Nimoys Commentary on The DVD saying they were trying to show how the mind would perceive time travel, and that they really did not want them to enter time travel and just come back out of it right away, that they wanted there to be something else in that space. I may be slightly off on some of that, so please feel free to correct me.

From watching it I'd say they were going for some sort of bizarre "man begat whale" thing. The floaty heads of the characters always remind me of Mt. Rushmore .

I almost wish they'd stuck with it for other time travels, just to see that weird-for-weirdness'-sake stuff all the other Star Treks would have come up with.

What I don't get is this strange whale-shaped thing and how it ends (the surface of a lake, and then there's wind and you hear the BoP landing or something).

JarodRussell I think the BOP's breaking thrusters firing is what interrupts the sequence, Another thing is the whole weirdness aspect, like KingDaniel said

In other time travel episode/films we've seen nothing on the kind, we've seen no quirky sequences, etc, the method of time travelling is the same as it is in "The Naked Time" and "Tommorow Is Yesterday" and in those episode theres no strange effects, in fact we see the ships chronometer rolling backwards and/or forwards depending on the circumstance

I think everything since TMP has been a Nexus hallucination and Kirk is going to wake up in the shower any minute... possibly with a Deltan lovebot.

I've always liked it because it's just so odd and upscaled for the big screen from what we've seen previously.

Incidentally, I recall being awed when I was little and seeing the Enterprise's chronometers running backwards as they went back in time. Now I realize that's silly. How can one mechanical/electronic device be running backwards while everyone and their perception of the world, and the clock, are running forward as usual?

^^I always called it a reverse "time echo," though I doubt if I really know what that means. :)

What do people make of the lines from later in the film being heard here first?

I've watched this film a hundred times and can't believe I never realised that! I suppose I've always just switched off during this "avant garde-esque" scene.

Loved this sequence and the hearing of the lines before they 'happen' since the day the movie came out. Nimoy at his best, infusing trek with artistic flair. It also gives the film a nice breather between the serious first act, and the humorous second act.

I enjoy the sequence for the audacity of being so non-traditional. However, the lines being heard before they are spoken bothers me. Wouldn't it have been cooler to hear lines from earlier in the film and maybe some lines from the earlier movie and series, or would that be just too geeky?
