Turtles Forever

I did recognize the Turtles from the live-action movies and the CGI movie (although those are supposed to be in the same universe, not two different ones).

The two were only quasi-related one another, in a similar manner of how Superman Returns was related to the Donner film. Besides, according to the rules of alternate universes presented in the special, considering one was CGI-Animation while the other was live action, that would make it enough for it to be another universe.

But I didn't spot the Turtles from the Next Mutation live-action TV series.

I think that's because the E&L (and most people in general) want to forget the whole thing ever happened.

And the toy universe, in which they lived in my basement and fought alongside the Ghostbusters.

That's the greatest universe of them all!

I noticed the anime turtles in there from a Japanese only line of figures and the resulting O.V.A's they used to promote it. That was when I knew they were showing us ALL the turtles lol.



FYI if you're thinking of going hunting down this rare turtles piece don't, it was never shown outside of Japan and it sucks.

I loved the various incarnations shown in Shredder's "master plan reveal" scene - it was like a trip down memory lane.

I didn't even recognize most of the comics-based Turtleverses they showed. Are there that many different continuities in the comics? Or were they exaggerating?

I know at least one continuity wasn't a separate series (the one where they looked like classic super-heroes), but a one-shot issue from the current Vol. 4 (I know because I have it somewhere). It was a bit weird as I remember owning at some point a lot of the comics they used to reference the different verses.

You're actually only half right. Eastman was a supporter of the NM universe, and the character of Venus in particular, while Laird was not. When Eastman sold his half of the Turtles rights to Laird, Laird chose to excise the universe - and Venus - from Turtles canon.

That must be right next to the universe I had in my room where Optimus Prime and Bumblebee took down Scorponok with the help of Raphael!

The Sewer Base made a great HQ for my combined team of Raphael, Dick Tracy, Superman, and a few others.

That was a really enjoyable romp through the Turtle multiverse. I can see why some saw the movie as bashing the 80's Turtles, but at the end I think it was trying to show affection in different ways to each Turtle-verse/era featured in the film. I loved the various incarnations shown in Shredder's "master plan reveal" scene - it was like a trip down memory lane. The way the movie ended also really showed a genuine affection for the Turtles as a whole. I may actually pick this up on DVD once it's out.

PS - Dug that they worked in a Tokka and Rahzar reference too.

Admit it. You want them to do a Transformers one now.

So is this the last thing they will do, since they just sold the rights to Viacom by way of Nickelodeon . Can you make an entire comic book universe equal to DC and Marvel from the Turtleverse? Not sure who else Mirage had besides then.

The way I see it is, Next Mutation was part of the movie universe. That could explain things

I wouldn't mind one. Of course, this has sort of been done in the comic books where other universes have popped up here and there. This one felt more like love for the source material than just cameos however.

this was a movie? i saw my son watching this over the weekend with all the other saturday morning cartoons, a regular 30minute time slot. it only caught my attention because i saw the old technodrome, then noticed the old shredder and kang was there.

Well, they don't look quite like they did in the movies, since in the movies they didn't have blatantly obvious seams on the necks and visible eye holes for the suit performers underneath the bandanas.

As I said above, it was aired as a 90-minute movie on Saturday the 21st, and is being re-aired in 30-minute installments over the following three Saturdays. What your son saw this past weekend was just part one of three.

If this is the end of the 03's, its a good sendoff. I like the way the main series concluded as well. As I said before, a cure for Yoshi-Splinter might have been nice (although this seemed like a circa 88 TMNT, so a cure would have violated the storylines). Also, back in the 03 wrap-up storyline, as the Turtles warped back to the 2000's, they saw an apocalyptic battle involving four Shredders. Three were accounted for : Utrom, Cyber and Demon. The fourth was never ID'd, and that battle seemingly averted. It would have been a lot to ask of a special like this, but if the fourth could have maybe been revealed as the early 90's serious/competent Shredder (still not as much so as the Utrom) maybe pulled in through some of the chaos caused by the realities touching, it would have been nice. For the sake of argument, the 4th did not seem to be Karai all dressed up, that I could see.

Edit : My bad. There were only three Shredders, and the third seemed to know the TMNT, so Karai is at least a possibility for the never-to-be-revealed ID.

I really wish they had been able to get the original voice actors. That really would have been great.

I also wish they'd not have marginalized the 90s turtles with so many tongue-in-cheek self-mockery jokes. A few are okay, but this special should have EMBRACED what was so great about the 90s show, not constantly mocked it. Yeah, the animation was a little goofy, but in ten years they'll look at this show and say the same thing. Get over it. Many of us grew up on the 90s turtles, and would enjoy more of a celebration of them than cheap jokes.

All in all? A clever idea, one I'd like to see more of. They've redone so many classic cartoons of the 90s, and most of us know these old shows, so a way to bring back ideas or even characters from them is a clever gimmick. Get the real voice actors, and cut back a bit on the mockery, and you'll have a winning program.

Worth a watch, but not a re-watch.

Just finished watching. I thought it was pretty good. Not brilliant, but they got enough funny lines and maintained enough affection for the different properties that I enjoyed the ride.

I'm amazed something this fannish actually got made, but happy that it did.

Yeah, but is he really dead? Shredder, like all great villains, keeps coming back.

It sounds fun, although a little fanwanky and totally non-canon (similar to the "Forever Red" Power Rangers special they did several years ago).

I don't think there's any reason to assume this is non-canonical. For one thing, I don't know if they're going to make any more of the new series after this, so if this is the last thing they do, nothing's going to contradict it. And most of what happened was reset at the end, though I guess there's still Hun's new mutation to contend with. But given that alternate realities are already an established part of the show's continuity, I can see this fitting in.

And whoever said "Forever Red" was non-canonical? It's not as if Power Rangers has ever had a particularly cohesive canon to begin with. It's contradicted itself plenty of times.

That's somewhat true. I could ask the question of how on Earth did Jason get his powers back. However, that sort of problem already was introduced when Adam showed up with his classic Black Ranger powers back on Power Rangers in Space. Still, I just can't get past how lame Serpentera was in "Forever Red." Back on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Serpentera was so big, the Megazord only came up to one of his toes. In "Forever Red," the new Red Ranger is able to take it out using nothing but his flying space motorcycle.

The CGI movie is firmly agnostic. Notice that the ooze cannister has a crack in it that conveniently obscures whether it says "TCRI" or "TGRI."

I watched to see the Mirage Turtles, those were "my Turtles". I've only caught bits and pieces of the cartoon versions over the years. I like the dropping jaws of the younger folks when tell them how the Turtles started as a crude parody of Frank Miller's Daredevil.
