Meh, American Football is a violent sport with strong importance on aggressiveness and physical strength, it's not surprising at all that players step over the line sometimes.
Also, how many people work in the NFL professionally? Two thousand, five thousand, or even more? That's a large pool of people to potentially get in trouble with the law.

I might have expected the millions of dollars and long periods off of work to soothe a savage breast.

Of course, you have a point anyway. However, sometimes they seem to keep control on the football field a little better than they do off of it
