Trying again to get into Farscape

Farscape had a smaller cast than most Trek shows, though what made John and Aeryn work more than anything was the chemistry Ben and Claudia had. Because their characters...didn't have a lot in common to lead to a relationship aside from them both looking human.

Even then the show had some difficulty justifying why the crew stayed together.

For the life of me I always wondered why they bothered keeping Rygel around. Or Jool. Or Chiana or Noranti.

They were all outcasts from their respective homes, except for John who was a stranger in a strange land (and hunted by Crais for a time). Better to stick together for common defense than to take off on their own. None of them can go home again and they have a leviathan to provide a place to live and for defense.

But what did Rygel or Jool or Noranti contribute to the crew? They caused more trouble than anything else.

Comedy. :vulcan:

In all seriousness, Rygel was their negotiator at times, along with John, and sometimes Zhaan. Rygel managed to get the Pirates for one episode, food very commonly, among other things.

Noranti cooked and that alone meant Rygel would fight to keep her. Jool is more a mystery, but so what? The ship was on the run from Peacekeepers and other baddies, and you're going to stop and ask what you've done lately?

Like JD said, it's not really a crew in the traditional sense, but a band of refugees who are brought together by circumstance. Like Lost.

Season one is a little uneven, but there are some really great episodes in this series. Even "stand alone" shows like My Three Crichtons were good. In my opinion it's worth it to stay with the series because The Peacekeeper Wars is the best payoff of all.

Ok right now im on season 2, disc 5, the locket. Even though half of season 1 and some of season 2 might be a little uneven, the characters steal the show. Just like tos star trek, even its worst n weak episodes n mediocre shows were saved just because we love the characters. Farscape might have some misses mixed in but its not nearly as bad to watch since we all care about the actors /characters in the show. Even the bad episodes arent so bad since we loves to watch all our beloved people on the show trying to get through the 45 min. Of a badisode.

Anyways, love season 2 f the most part. Great opening and good filler episodes. Even though i enjoyed the princess trilogy it could've been better f a threeparter. If they had made it 2 episodes it would'veworked better. Turning to stone f 80 years?! Wow who would let that happen to them? The whole subplot with scorpius is getting very good. At least so far they gradually showing him more n more but not over killing it.

Didnt care that much for beware the dog. Waste of a episode. Same with take the stone. Its a shame i didnt catch this when it came on. Too bad not too many people seen it or talk about it. The show is good, much better than a lot of stuff out there.

Once you get through the episode with the weird spider/woman/alien thing (I can't remember the title, but I think it's the episode right after "Terra Firma"), you'll be good to go.

I had similar frustrations with the first half of Season 4 the first time around. After the amazing momentum they built in Season 3, something about Season 4 just felt off. I have come to really appreciate it, though, in the context of what is yet to come.

Things did indeed pick up and rekindle my interest after that. We'll be finishing off the show proper next week in all likelihood.

I think my general analysis is going to be that I find the monster of the week episodes too abundant and formulaic, to the point where I'm not sure I'd care to rewatch the series anytime soon. While they do a decent job of at least throwing bits and pieces of arc material even into those episodes, they tend to still leave me feeling like I watched too much chaff for too little wheat.

While I appreciate that they do a whole lot of weird stuff that I don't think any other show could really get away with, sometimes it feels a bit too much like they're being weird just to be weird, instead of in the service of a good story.

That said, the stuff in late season four is pretty intense and dark even by Farscape standards, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how the show (and the mini-series) concludes.

Just remember, in order to get the full Farscape experience, you have to wait two years before you're allowed to watch the miniseries.

Well, at the very least, take a moment after you watch "Bad Timing" to remember that we all thought it was the end.

For over a year or so at that. I honestly thought it wouldn't happen. I remember the announcement of the miniseries as much as I do the miniseries itself.

Lmao now thats a good one. Thanks f the laugh. 2 more episodes of season 2 left here. I had to go to work after finishing on a cliffhanger where john trades himself in exchange f dago son. Now i can see what happens finally. Been driving me crazy all day haha

Anyone else feels farscape is underated?! Season 3 is too good. Just like Babylon5, just gots to get through season 1. Than all is good.

I can't really agree that it was underrated, as I thought the show's quality was...inconsistent.

Put another way, I enjoyed watching it the first time around, but I don't think I would have gotten into it without seeing it with a friend, and I'm not sure if or when I'll rewatch it.

That said, some episodes are definitely great.

I wouldn't say its underrated. There are parts of it I love, and parts of it that are basically the worst TV sci fi I've ever seen (I still have';t been able to bring myself to finish Season 4). With Farscape, I really enjoy Season 1 and 3, tolerate Season 2 and can't stand Season 4, so I can't really say its underrated.

I don't know if I'd call it underrated, it seems to have quite a few fans on here, and if it's got a lot in a limited community like this, then there's probably a whole lot more out there.

I adore Farscape, but I agree that it has a lot of crappy episodes throughout. And sometimes even a good episode has really poorly done parts. That said, for the love of the characters, the overall story arc, and the really great episodes, I consider myself a fan. When Farscape was good, it was some of the best scifi television every produced.

I watched it once all at once after blindly buying the show on DVD. I watched the whole thing really quickly and loved it, i even loved the season 4 ending.

I tried rewatching it again na few times and there is a ton of crap. The season 3 finale is still one of my favorite episodes of sci-fi.

I love Farscape but I don't think it's underrated. I think it was a very loyal and great following, and that's all I could hope for, personally.

Ok its been awhile. Lets get this started back up. I had gotten into the cw shows and finally now back to finishing farscape. Im almost finished with disc 2 season 4.

All i have to say is i been off all day and just been watching this show like crazy. Season 3 cliffhanger was just as good as the previous cliffhangers. Damn i love this show. Its good characters and fun mixed in with good scifi and drama. This was pre battlestar and right after babylon 5. You can tell too.

Even the not so great episodes are good and fun just because of the characters. John Quixote was too good and fun. Very cool. Shame most shows now take themselves too seriously most of the time. You never know what will happen next. Beloved characters come and go, villians become good only to have new baddies take their place. Good stuff.

My wife and I had started a rewatch a couple of years ago, on the occasional evening when there wasn't a regular TV show on that we watch. I think we got to disk 4 and then we got sidetracked with a couple of shows we'd never seen on DVD (Supernatural), and some oldies we liked to watch together (Nash Bridges, Spencer for Hire, the Equalizer), and Farscape got sidelined. I've been dying to get back to it.

Then one day I see my wife watching it in her hobby room while she's building her dollhouse furniture. She said she got tired of waiting, and she missed the show.

I married well. :)
