Trying again to get into Farscape

I'm not sure I get the Chianna/Jathy thing, that affair doesn't make a lot of sense and is more soapy than dramatically interesting.

I think it's because chiana and Dargo have different views what their relationship is and where it's going. Dargo wants a loving and committed relationship where they can settle down together and assumes that Chiana wants the same when in reality Chiana is wanting a more fun less serious type of relationship and is feeling trapped and tied down by Dargos level of commitment.

She is too immature and doesn't know how to handle the situation so instead of talking she just does something recklessly impulsive that will, in a sense, free her from the situation she's trapped in without any thought to consequences. Jothee also has Dargo projecting an idealised view of who he is and how their relationship will be onto him and doesn't know any of these people enough to care that much about consequences.

It is very soapy and melodramatic.

Reminded me a bit too much of a situation that developed on "Angel". I'm glad they didn't draw it out at least.

I admit I morbidly wonder how often, if ever, things like that occur in the real world.

Also an interesting clash of cultures, which presents an ongoing challenge to both Dargo and Chiana, due to their attraction to each other as well as their expectations of a relationship.

I don't know about soapy, but I found it interesting.

Hey gang. I had picked up the farscape dvd box set used for $35 on ebay like 6 months ago along with the peacekeeper wars. Anyways im just now watching it. So far, so good. Very interesting and very different.

Im only on disc 3 of season 1. But i have to say this show is so different and out there compared to a lot out there. A lot of the episodes so far are stand alone and dont really add to the whole. But thats refreshing since it gives me so much time to get to know these characters and the world. Its pretty good to simply kick back and invest in these characters. Very cool. Anyways figure i put my 2 cents in. I havent really watched a whole series since last year when i picked up all the fringe seasons cheap. So this will be fun. It took a few episodes to really get into it though.

I can see how farscape can be blah to people trying to watch it and get into it. But after about half of season 1 its paying off now. Cant wait to see whats to come.

That said, I'm mid-season 4 right now and just went through three episodes in a row (friend and I do three/night/week) that seemed fairly lackluster and interesting, but ultimately expendable (though I guess we'll see). Perhaps most troubling was that normally we find Farscape's tendency to push the envelope of what we're used to seeing on TV to be compelling, or at least amusing, but while one of the episodes we watched this time around did that, it really failed to hold our interest, which may be a first.

The first half of season 4 is a little rough, though I appreciated it much more on repeat viewings. The second half of the season is just outstanding.

Of course they do. Just because an episode isn't part of some huge arc doesn't mean it isn't worth something. Were individual episodes of older non-serialized TV shows like Star Trek worthless? Nope. Some of the best TV stories ever, happened in 50 minutes. And they're part of enjoying the entire series.

While I won't dispute the wisdom in what you're saying, I find Farscape tends to tell arc-related stories better than standalone.

Maybe so - some shows do one way better than the other, and vice-versa - but I like both ways.

I have to agree. A lot of the episodes, even ones that seem like one shots, are often interesting insights in to the different characters. Even most of Season 1 felt more like using Crichton as a fish at of water for a while, in addition to Crais chasing him.

Finished season 1. Watching season 2. I have to say gang wow. Very good stuff. This show just needs a little patience to get into it and then it picks up very good. Most of season 1 (ok like 75%) was very good stuff. A few clunkers but not too bad overall f a show that was made in '99. Refreshing to watch something "new" and refreshing.

I haven't watched much Farscape lately since I got into Buffy.

Might be telling me something that it took me 2 years to get through 2 seasons of Farscape and 4 months to get through 4.5 seasons of Buffy and 1.5 of Angel.

I started trying to get into the series awhile back but didn't get very far but went ahead and bought the complete series at some point thinking that I will eventually give it another go. The first few episodes were intriguing but I think that we were mainly working through some other series. Wife and I are getting close to finishing B5, so maybe we'll try Farscape next? We're also trying to get the complete series of Stargate SG-1 so that we can finish that series too (I guess that a couple of the actors from Farscape become regular members of that show too?).

The main characters start to trust each other (very slowly ) in S1.

Yeah, I loved the slow building of the relationships over the first season. Crichton and D'Argo is still one of my favorite TV bromances.
