Trying again to get into Farscape

Out of Their Minds:

I like the body switching premise and some of the characters did some good impressions of each other but the villains in this episode were a bit too silly.

Grade: C-

"Out of their Minds" is definitely one of my favorite non-serious episodes. It's goofy, silly, over-the-top in places, but it definitely lets the actors just have fun with their roles.

I can understand why it may rate lower for some, but for me, it is the quintessential look at Farscape taking on scifi tropes. Just a lot of fun.

Aeryn doing Rygel might be the best part. Not to mention Aeryn as John, looking down her shirt front.

I love Out of Their Minds. The bad guys in that one are the Skeksi lookalikes, right? I always got a kick out of them, but The Dark Crystal is one of my favorite movies so I think that might have something to do with it.

I don't mind the way the aliens looked, I just think having cultures based entirely around murdering people for no reason is dumb and cheap. Yes I hate the Hirogen too.

My Three Crichtons:

Much better scifi trope episode. It applies criticism to the basic assumption of most scifi that the value of a person is related to their intelligence and then puts the crew in a position where somebody has to die or else everybody dies and they have to assess the value of three versions of the same person.

Grade: B

Netflix has a still from each episode which it shows to represent the next episode in sequence. In the 'Next' this time, Chianna is topless with D'argo. This should be interesting.

Always love good Farscape discussion and I've read some of your reviews today, JirinPanthosa, and enjoy your insights. I'm close to starting a Farscape rewatch myself, after I rewatch Orphan Black in preparation for the new season. It's been a long time since I've seen Farscape and look forward to getting back into it.

These next few episodes are where I think the show really finds its footing. I absolutely love the show as a whole, but the "Look at the Princess" trilogy is probably my favorite group of episodes.

I just ramped up my Farscape rewatch to finish S4 today, so I can do the OB rewatch before April 18.

I just did that with Enterprise.

Is there something special about April 18?

It's the Season Premiere of my favorite series: Orphan Black.

It's also the date the Giants get their world championship rings, but no one here cares about that. ;)

Look At The Princess Trilogy:

Interesting group of episodes that bring a whole lot of different themes together. The basic premise of the episode was a little silly, Crichton gets drawn into the arcane rituals of the royal line of succession. But this premise managed to draw out the basic emotions and motives of all parties involved. Crichton's emotional fatigue and fear of Scorpious, his relationship with Aeryn, D'argo's openly hedonistic relationship with Chianna.

It's an odd choice to put such a huge piece of character development as a B plot in a trilogy. Whether they really wanted to have Zhann alone on the ship when she is tested by Moya's builders and has to deal with her apparent death. Maybe they put that in this trilogy just to get Moya and Zhann away from the planet to cut off any escape opportunities and telekinesis related defenses.

I like the way Scorpious ran his hand through the acid after Crichton decided to have mercy on him to make the point that he is not vulnerable to it.

I wonder if Chianna knows that D'argo totally "DO IT TO JULIA!"'d her.

Grade: B-

A Look At A Princess was filmed as two parter but with so much extra footage shot they decided to make it a three parter, putting the season seriously overbudget. It's a repetitive storyline, Chricton's life is threatened three times, he goes for D'Argo for advice twice interupting D'Argo having sex with Chianna. And really the fact that Chricton will a daughter outthere is quickly forgotten about. It was nice seeing Jonathan Hardy in a live action role, but it was pretty obvious the trap idea wasn't going to work.

Beware Of Dog:

I almost wanted to just say "...WTF?!" For this one. Whose idea was it to make the Vorc look like a gremlin? Every twist here was forcefully overchoreographed and obvious. Everything in the episode looked silly, and it's got bad horror movie levels of characters being completely oblivious to things that are obvious to the audience. Crichton hallucinating Scorpious seemed like a clumsy way to show us that he has a touch of PTSD from being tortured and pursued.

Grade: D-

Won't Get Fooled Again:

I really like this episode. I love the way Crichton knows everything the audience knows the whole time and acts appropriately. That's something you don't see a whole lot in scifi, normally they are completely oblivious to the patterns that are obvious to the audience. This whole thing about the chip is a little too close to what Bester did to Garibaldi in B5 but it certainly makes things interesting.

Grade: A-
