true or unture can you have a star name after some 1

FALSE. It's just a scam to separate you from your money.

The International Astronomical Union is in charge of naming stars.

If you managed to launch a lightbulb large enough to be mistaken from a star if it suddenly appeared, people will notice you putting it into orbit.

If you could really name stars, they would already be snatched up by the corporations. Sirius would now be Walt Disney Star, Polaris would be Wal-Mart, and Alpha Centauri would be the On Star.

"When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything. The IBM Stellar Sphere. The Microsoft Galaxy. Planet Starbucks."

False. False. False. As an astronomer, I cannot tell you how many times I've been asked that. It's a scam. Period. If you really want to part with your money, send me a check and I will name a star for you. At least, you will be doing something good.

They've apparently discovered a new tiny body in the solar system and named it the Walt Disney planet. Scientific analysis has concluded that it's a small world after all. [That's enough - someone]

It'll have to be a written note payable to the International Observatories Union (IOU). ;)

No no, make it payable to Doctor Iguana (hey, it's a good name for a comic super-villain!) and I will name a star after you. Even a constellation, if you wish. That means, I will put a post-it with your name on the star charts poster in my bedroom. I can't guarantee it won't fall off after a few days, tho.

False.

I am developing a space opera game and it just so happened that I went looking for star-names recently. What I learnt was that only asteroids are named. There are literally too many stars in the universe to be named. Most stars are just given a numeric designation based on when and where it was discovered. Only a few hundred stars near our solar system have some kind of named designation, eg "Wolf-359", "Bernard's Star".

In the end, I just thought up a list of random names for star systems in my game.

It's amazing that this "business" is allowed to operate. Imagine telling someone you'll do something for them, get them to give them money and not only do you not, nor have you the ability, do that thing but in turn you give that person aboslutely nothing in return! Oh, sure, people who do this scam get a certificate of some-sort -which is worth less than the paper it is printed on given that the company has no authority to name stars- and a "star map" to view it -reports are that this "star map" is all but impossible to use to locate the "star."

I mean, it's just a brilliant scam, isn't it! You give me money, I give you nothing!

It's a shame that it's a scam. With tens of millions of stars visible to even small telescopes, there are plenty of stars to go around. It seems that if the International Astronomical Union wanted to authorize a trustworthy organization to name obscure stars for people, it would be doable.
