So I was talking to my aunt on the phone the other day about Star Trek, and how much I enjoyed it (and that I'm dragging her and my uncle to see it!) , and she mentioned that she was watching SNL and that Nimoy had made a very funny cameo, which reminded her of a story...
Back in her wayward college days in the 1970s, she and a friend had gone to eat lunch at some fancy restaurant...they sat down, and after they had ordered, a very tall, slender man wearing an expensive leather jacket was exiting the restaurant...she says she has no idea why she looked up at the time, but she did, and she said she recognized him...it was Spock
!! She said that she was never a fan of TOS, but that he just had this magnetic presence, like this air of sophistication that caught her attention...
Kind of reminds me of the "genetic dignity" comment...I have never been the starstruck type, never gone out of my way to meet celebrities ,(although I was impressed that my aunt's neighbors invited us to a party which Bono from U2 was attending, such a douchebag by the way, but I like their older stuff) but I have to say, I was thinking as I watched Nimoy on screen that when this man passes into the next life, I am going to feel like someone kicked me in the gut...he's just created such an incredible character with Spock, and even though I felt Quinto did a great job, losing Nimoy will be like losing a national treasure...such an artist...
Oh well, he's still kicking around, though his appearance on SNL reminds me of how transient life on this earth is...I hope I am remembered as fondly when I'm his age (hey, it'll be 2063, so here's hoping I not only make it through WW III but that I live to see our pointy-eared friends greet us in Montana!!!
