Trouble sleeping

So it's 1:45 am in melbourne at the moment and for the life of me I cannot fall asleep. :scream:

I'm about the try a combination of having something to eat and watching a dvd and see if that helps with getting some snooze action.

Anyway my lack of sleepability got me wondering if there are any other insomniacs about and what your tips are for falling asleep when you can't.

The key to sound sleeping is to stop letting yourself wake up naturally, as in whenever you please. If you get up with that "OH NO, IT'S THE ALARM" feeling and want to roll over and nap some more, then usually about 16 hours later you will be able to dive into bed and go right to sleep.

I was going through that insomnia bit for a while recently, because I had an empty schedule and got to a point where I wasn't getting up until the afternoon. At that rate, At 1 AM in the morning I had only been up for 12 hours. I found it hard to sleep before around 5 AM, roughly when I normally would be getting up.

If you are doing alot of travelling between time zones, or have a very changable schedule, sleeping patterns can be difficult to maintain; but it is nevertheless really important to maintain a pretty strict repeating 1:2:1:2 ratio of hours sleeping and hours awake.

I fixed my problem by forcing myself to get up on time - at 6 AM - after going to bed at 3 AM. The next evening at 9, I was happy to go to bed, and ever since I've been back on track.

Thats some good advice Joshua, thank you. I cured my insomnia by watching the really bad voyager episode 'Virtuoso', i dont think i made it through the first act.

Also thank you Joshua for being the first reply in my first ever thread!

Watching movies or TV episodes that you've seen a lot can usually help. You want to pay attention, but you know too much of what happens already, so you just end up tuning it out and passing out.

Of course, this usually results in me falling asleep in the living room instead of my bed, but oh well, sleep is sleep.

In fact, it might be a genetic thing. My dad can't fall asleep unless he's in the basement in his recliner, and my mom can't fall asleep unless she's in the living room on the couch. I don't even think they use their bedroom.

I've had insomnia for about 16 years. I can nod off at the drop of a hat, but I almost always wake up at about 2-3am and can seldom get back to sleep.

I have trouble sleeping, too.

If I know that I should be going to sleep but my mind is too busy to cooperate, I will count backward from 500. If I make myself focus on the counting, I can usually be asleep before I hit 350.

this is pretty much what happend to me last night. By 10:00 i was snoozin.

Don't get upset or nervous when you can't sleep. Remember, insomnia is nothing to lose any sleep over.
