Trolls on other message boards

So how do you guys deal with trolls on other messages boards? The ones that keep on bothering you by replying to all of your post with name calling and cussing? You try reporting them, but nothing happens or your TOS doesn't go through or they have so many reports on that one poster that they are doing a slow process of banning them.

1) Ignore them.
2) Report them.

If 1 and 2 are unsuccessful and there's no good explanation as to why #2 is having no results, I doubt it's a board I want to remain a part of.

Ignore them. If they piss you off, walk away and come back later. While there's beauty in the artfully crafted response, a troll generally doesn't react, so there's not much point.

I've had a troll or two show up on my blog. First I try polite reason, then ridicule, then the banhammer.

What do you do for a board like Television Without Pity where the mods are the out-of-control trolls?

If it's anything like this message board, I just put them on block.

I lurked on another board some time back where the longtime posters would rip all the newbies mercilessly and the mods never lifted a finger, but they would deal out bans and suspensions for the most idiotic meaningless things (though not quite as bad as TWOP, apparently). I actually knew a friend in real life who was immediately banned for repeating something someone else posted which was apparently against board rules, but the original poster never received any punishment whatsoever. I knew then that wasn't a board worth bothering with.

I tend to avoid any boards where that kind of things becomes a problem.

I only frequent sites that have Trek-BBS-style moderators who keep things somewhat neat.

It's just not worth it otherwise.

The best thing is to either ignore them (and report it), or reply with a clever retort that doesn't attack them, but basically ignores their insult. Either way, if they can't get to you, they'll eventually give up.
But some people on the internet seem hell bent on being a-holes, so it's not always easy.

I tend to ignore trolls.

Sometimes, just sometimes, what seems to be trolling is not actually trolling at all. For example. back in 2002 I was banned from another board for "trolling". It was a scifi/fantasy board that had its own Orlando Bloom fora. I started a thread in which I said that I thought that Bloom had been miscast as Joe Byrne in the upcoming Ned Kelly movie. I added that I thought he would be more suited for the role of Steve Hart. That remark caused multiple complaints to be made against me and I got a permaban.

I post on an NHL centric board in which there are trolls all over the place. I try to ignore them, but they are really annoying sometimes.

The only other Boards I post at are small, friendly places. There has never been any trolling or any other problems at any of them.

Well, I am a member at IMDB, but I don't regularly post there and I've never personally had a problem.

At the board where I'm an admin, the four of us as moderators will note any newbie with a spamming or hostile attitude in the Mod forum. If agreed, I just ban them immediately. Fortunately, there have only been three instances of trolls, the rest have been live spammers or spambots. We instituted a tricky security solution recently and the bots can't get through. Life's good.

I've never been in a board that's very terribly unregulated, unless YouTube comments count. If so then I love destroying a five-page-long argument over something stupid with a simple point of logic. Then I watch them drop any pretense of being civilized in the face of imminent psychological defeat, and let the comment replies roll in, generally swearing that would make a sailor hide in his room and cry.

I like the fun and imaginative trolls. I wouldn't even consider them trolls, really, more contributors to the overall forum hilarity.

The boring shouty ones, not so much.
