You'd think if instant death was the result they'd have some sort of warning on it, or make the back side of the gate look noticably different to the front. IIRC the only difference is the lack of hieroglyphs.

Well, usally, the stairs leading up to it are only on one side.
And there's got to be a note like "only enter on the kawoosh side" or something. 
What I don't get is how the Kawoosh doesn't destroy the iris when it normally absolutely destroys everything in its path.
