Tribbles in Trek (2008): Gerrold Sues?

Glad they actually bothered to ask David and find out he's more than glad to have his creations in the new movie....

Why would anyone expect Gerrold to object? He didn't complain when tribbles were used in ST III or Enterprise, so there's no reason he'd do so now.

It wouldn't matter anyway. Neither Gerrold nor Heinlein have any rights to the tribbles. They are the property of CBS/Paramount, not the creators. Do you think Andy Probert has a copyright on the Enterprise-D? These people were hired by the production company to create a design for them. They have no rights to the design other than to say, "Hey, look... I created that."

Sorry, that's not always the case where writing is concerned. In any event, Heinlein was neither hired nor compensated by "Star Trek" for the use of tribbles or "flatcats" or whatever.

An animal that apparently nobody could possibly have heard of until Jones brought them to K-7, and here we see one in a prequel.

All I've got to say is that the person holding the tribble carrier had better be on the short and fat side, and be annoying people by trying to sell them useless trinkets.

Just cause Kirk & crew were unaware of them - doesn't mean they weren't ever off in the background someplace well they were distracted with other matters...

Or they could appear in a later time period well after Kirk and crew had already dealt with "the trouble with tribbles." hard to say at the moment.

Well yes, but fans love to blow these tidbits into the sky is falling scenarios just to have a reason to be critical.

Context more then anything else is also often the key to the often cried for "originality" around here.

Well, considering the physical appearance of Stanely Adams in TTWT, this could cry out as a perfect cameo for today's William Shatner!

Seriously though, tribbles appeared already in Dr. Phlox's menagerie as food for one of his lizard-like creatures I believe?

There's not any reason tribbles can't exist before TTWT: the difference there is they hit the grain silo on K-7, and get into the food replication supply system on the NCC-1701. Without that tremendous food source, their reproduction explosion system might be dormant.

This really doesn't cause any tribble at all for continuity!

According to the wiki entry on tribbles - "Trouble with Tribbles" isn't considered a "first contact" since Jones and presumably others are aware of them. Just cause Kirk and crew don't know doesn't mean anyone else in the rest of the galaxy doesn't know what they are.

Didn't DG mention in his first book about the attention by called by the on-call research firm about the potential similarity between the tribbles and the flat-cats?

And, that, according to DG, Heinlein's requested 'compensation' was simply a copy of (iirc) an autographed/personalized copy of the episode script?
